They must be stuck for money.
NASN, the European cabsat channel dedicated to North American sports, has been acquired by ABC- and Hearst Corporation-owned US sports broadcaster ESPN.

Pay-TV sportscaster Setanta Sport Holdings and venture capital firm Benchmark Capital Europe have sold off the channel to the US firm, though terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

New ownership by ESPN "will help us continue to deliver the best sports programming for our viewers, and reach even more sports fans in Europe," said NASN co-founder and chief executive Amory Schwartz.

The deal, which will add to ESPN's European assets which already include four-year-old retro archive channel ESPN Classic, is expected to close early next year, subject to regulatory approvals.

“This acquisition will allow us to accelerate our European television business,” said Lynne Frank, MD of ESPN, Europe, Middle East and Africa. “NASN is a great fit for our company and we will continue to build on its success and appeal across some of the most vibrant multichannel markets in the world.”

NASN airs over 800 live and as-live sports events each year, including over 200 live NHL games, 60 live NFL games in certain markets and 250 live MLB games. The channel, soon to be rebranded with the ESPN livery, launched in October 2002. Today it reaches over six million households in 26 European countries.
