Hey i was just wonderiong has anyone on here ever traveled to Amsterdam and hired a barge. If so what were there experiences like, how much was and(and the time of year)? A few of my mates and myself are thinking of heading over in the summer and renting one for a week.

Hey dime, i lived in germany about 10yrs ago and frequently visited the 'Dam for weekends and stuff, as you do ;) . I did rent a canal boat for 5days when the lads came over. AFAIK you rent it as a 'fixed' abode, not to travel up n down the canals, its just another form of accomodation, just same as hotel, apt, etc. They are not cheap, even (jeez actually 12yrs ago  ) you were looking at a good few hundred. The plus side is that you can sleep upto 10 or 12, not that you will be doing much sleeping... It is a cool way to go, but you might find renting an apt in a cool old building might give you more spends. Not sure if you have been there before, but its an extremely cool place, be prepared to spend hours walking, looking for your barge at the end of the night :D

Cool, yeah i saw the fixed places i think you can get fixed barges now tht are much smaller. As for finding things, tellme about it. I've been before but this time we are thinking of really making it a mental trip.

Yeah, its one of my absolute fave places on the planet.. Apart from the obious attractions/distractions, its a beautiful city, people are friendly, gift grub and the rest. a good time to go is for the queens b'day, i think its early april or early may, the whole city goes orange! If you havent been to the Heineken brewery, its worth a visit. They only run 2 tours per day, i think 9am an 11am, and they are strict about times. However if one of your gang is celebrating their b'day, bring your passport - you get special treats.. Ive tried on numerous occasions to get to an Ajax home game, but its always sold out. You might get a tour on non-match days however. Dont bother with the sex museum, waste of money, but the live shows are, well, i dont need to tell ya...
Id be interested to know what kind of prices you get quoted for barges.

joebhoy - not sure where your coming from, ive never had any bad experiences with the dutch. Its like anywhere, you will have a$$holes, but its as much to do with your demeanour as anything else

All the dutch people i've ever met over here have been really friendly and thats a whole lot because i used to work for Aer Lingus but when i was in the dam there were plenty of unfriendly people. I found that as soon as you headed away from the city centre that the people in shops were sound as a bell! thats my 2 cents!
