GPS mapping

I know there are a couple of you folks who are dab hands with GPS mapping software. I've just bought a Garmin PDA style GPS - The iQue M5 which came with Mapsource V7 for Europe.

Some of the mapping data is a little outdated though - Mainly due to roadworks and that sort of thing, and updates aren't readily available as the product has actually been discontinued.

Can anyone provide some guidance on a suitable application I can use to navigate with my own maps (I'm handy enough with Photoshop for example to update .bmp maps etc) both on the laptop with a USB GPS receiver and also occasionally with the Garmin PDA? Ideally I'll be using it with the O.S. eastern area CD too - Is there one Desktop and PDA (Windows Pocket PC 2003 SE) based application that I can use with a variety of mapping data formats?

    Thanks,

    Gil

I don't know much about the whole Garmin mapping thing, but isn't there an updated version of Mapsource available (v9?) ? I wouldn't have thought that the fact that the iQue M5 is discontinued would make any difference.

There's always mapedit (http://www.geopainting.com/en/) which claims to be able to edit MapSource maps. I haven't tried it myself.

For raster maps, there's OziExplorer which is available in both PC and PPC versions. As long as you have the map in some sort of raster format, you can get it into OziExplorer somehow, and then calibrate it. For the OSi Trailmaster stuff, you'll have to be a bit 'flexible' with the license agreement, and export the map images using some kind of 'print to image file' utility (like PDFCreator) from within Trailmaster, but it can be done.

Most vector maps, like Mapsource, or those used in any of the PDA based SatNav products are proprietary in format, and there's no mapping program that I know of that will handle them apart from the maker's own offerings.

Any idea where i could buy City Navigator Europe v9, other than from garmin online shop (they don't ship outside of the US).
I can't seem to find any online retailers selling it..

Only the NT version has been released, as of yet, so if your GPSR doesn't make use of NT (new technology) you'll have to wait a couple of weeks.

Garmin do ship outside of the US. Try their UK site:
    www.Garmin.com/uk

Are you eligble for an upgrade? In that case, you should go through the Mygarmin interface, request an upgrade disk, and then pay for the upgrade when you go to retrieve your unlock code. Works out a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new release.

If you're not elligble, here are a list of Garmin retailers, that you could try
    http://garmin.com/uk/wheretobuy/index.jsp
but it''s unlikely that anyone will be able to supply it sooner than garmin
