I'm watching the video stream from the Dail at the moment and Martin Cullen is in the hot seat.

It's truly disheartening when you see that there are no more than 5 people in the room - it shows just how little interest politicians have in (public) transport.

Mark, the way the debates work is that a TD only will be in the chamber if s/he has an immediate vested interest to be at a debate at a given time, which is usually if they table a motion or a question to be asked at that time. They will stay for the relevant section and then move on to sub committees, visits, clinics, press calls, Media interviews, Seanid sittings, constituency meetings, office work etc.

The quality of public transport might be awful but the quality of that stream is fantastic - 1.1Mbps.

well you know what they say about all politics being local!

From my experience this transfers itself to what masquerades as public transport policy in this country...ideally we'd have a public transport czar with executive powers to oversee these things without the influence of "short term" politicians but I don't see that happening any day soon.

So we're going to be left with soundbytes and platitudes from local councillors/TD's who'll make out that they personally bought extra buses/trains etc and are fighting hard for proper transport while on the other hand are blocking QBC's, route changes, roads etc. because a few cranks call to their clinics complaining.

We're in a heap in this country and it'll take some pretty hard decisions to sort things out and nowt will happen with the political structures the way they are.
