Just wondering is it possible to use your irish vodafone mobile phone in Canada for sending and receiving texts? Or is it like America in that you can only receive texts and calls?

I'm moving to Canada myself in a few weeks and I have just come off the phone with Vodafone as it happens.

They tell me that if your phone is Tri Band then you can use it just like in Ireland... if you want to be charged a fortune! They will charge you like youre Roaming.. charge for both incoming and outgoing calls.
Not sure if they charge to receive texts though. But you can definitely send & receive them. But it will be international rates to send a text. I am Bill Pay with Vodafone so you might want to clarify this info with your particular set up.

I think coverage can differ if you're on Ready to Go or Bill Pay.
I have just been sent an unblocking code to allow my phone to accept other Sim cards other than Vodafone. So when I get there I will be buying a Canadian sim card (as opposed to buying the whole phone).

well my o2 phone worked in Montreal and so did my friend's vodafone phone but it might depend on where you are in Canada.

Be warned - Canadian mobile phone companies are outrageously expensive. There are very few options if you want to be able to send texts back to Ireland and not get charged for incoming calls from Ireland. I got suckered into a 3-year contract with Rogers that's costing me an absolute fortune. I've heard Fido's pay-as-you-go plan is good, though.
Good luck with it, though - getting myself a phone was the single most stressful thing I had to do when I got to Canada - even worse than setting up a bank account.
