USB Speed Issue

I am having a few issues with my USB 2 ports.
I have an Asus A7V333 motherboard.
It had 2 built in USB2 ports and 4 USB1 ports.
However the USB2 ports stopped working completely so I bought a PCI to USB2 card.
This works but the speeds are not what I would expect.
Writing to a USB2 stick averages around 1Mb/s while reading from it is very fast as you would expect from a USB2 device.
I need to get a new Hard drive but I have no more IDE slots left so I must either get an external hard drive or get an ide controller card plus an internal hard drive.
If I get an external hard drive I'm afraid it will be too slow as there is something wrong with the USB2 write speeds on the PC.
I have installed the correct drivers but the problem still persists.
    Anyone have any tips ?

have you tried checking the manufacturing details of your PCI card to see exactly what the USB speed is in Mbs? don't forget the difference in MB and Mb when you're at it!

Have you considered getting a bigger hard disk to replace one, then sell the old one to offset the cost?

    Are you running XP ?

If so you should have not installed any drivers as they are part of the OS when you install service pack 2 for XP.

Try updating the bios as well in case there is some bug affecting the card, the last released was 1017 on Asus site. DOS flash utility.

Be sure to clear the CMOS afterwords.

    Its a USB2.0 Host Controller .
The speed I am getting is 1MB/s not 1Mb/s sorry but its still far too slow.
I already have 2 Hard Drives ,a 200GB and a 160GB so to get the extra space I'm looking for I'd need to get about a 400GB and sell the 160GB.
    Its an option I suppose.

Yes I am running Win XP SP2 (Version 2002)
The host controller card came with XP drivers for the card (ALI).
I dont think upgrading the Bios is a viable option,I have V1015 and when I upgraded, the machine became very unstable so I went back to 1015.
The ports are showing up as USB2 in the System details but there is some slight fault I cant put my finger on.

The drivers that came with it are for pre-SP2 WinXP systems and should not be installed on a SP2 box.

There is a chance XP stopped the driver install if you did attempt to install them but I cannot recall exactly what happens (the last time I saw someone do this the system blue screened).

As for the bios update did you try clearing the CMOS after the first time you updated as that is a common issue which folks forget to do. The 1015 bios is there on Asus site along with a "beta" 1018 so if it doesn't work you can always go back to 1015.

I tested the USB2 transfer speed on my new laptop just now.
To transfer a 320MB file to the USB2 Memory stick took 75 secs ,to read back took 20 secs.
On the Asus it took 90 secs to write ,20 secs to read back.
I think that the USB memory stick may be limiting the speed
    I read this elsewhere:
'If you are moving data on or off a USB memory stick or a camera for example then the speed will almost certainly not be 40 times as fast due to the actual memory in the stick/card limiting the speed'
This could be the problem as the transfer speeds on the new Laptop which has USB 2 are similar to that on the Asus machine.
I would think that if I got an external hard drive it would be alot faster.

That only happens me when I plug a USB2 device into a USB1 port.
If I plug it into a USB2 enabled port there is no message displayed which is what I would expect.
