I want to train at home and I want a punchbag but no room in the house :(

    Im frustrated,

    i want to do some extra MT training but i have no room for a punch bag!! head is wrecked!!
    i could do it in the kitchen with one of those standup person shaped bags for like 300 quid but i dont want to crack my shin off the washing machine oe something!

    Also would ppl think im weird if i went down the park with a few cones and a medicine ball and started hammering out some circuits? does anyone currently do it? I'm bored with the gym and queuing for benches and fancy doin some circuit training and outdoors training, anyone any ideas?

    F**K what people think, if your doing something good ( as long as your nothing nothing bad/illegal/unethical in life). thats called a fear of rejection, and is one of the biggest things in the world that stop people going for what they realy want in life, and we call get it to some degree at different times.

    What I used to do in the gym/fitness club was while I was waiting on a machine etc, I used to shadow kickboxing in front of the mirrors, it was great, really improved my kicks and speed. sure you get some amused looks but so what!!!

    Trees in the park are great for training targeting in using your kicks, do not bash them full whack, but kick slow and aim for target, get your technique right. I found them great for working on spinning side kick. and small saplings and poles are great for getting the technique for a rear choke down... I am serious I have done all of this.

    I d be more discreet if you lived over in the Dublin 7 area, as people might think you escaped from the mad house in grangegorman.!!!! ; - 0

    This time of year my mates and I regulary train/work out in the local park.
    Usually pull ups, dips, sit ups sprints, press ups. Some times we bring the pads and work out on them. We kick off at about 6.00 am before it gets too warm. No one pays us any mind,the occasional dog walker thinks that we are part of the boot camp group that also use the park
    Get into it, it's a great way to train, fresh air, no waiting for machines/weights to be free.

    Parks are grand. We have one near our flat that has several workout stations on a trail, allowing you to jog or run between each.

    like yourself o.p i bought a punchbag this summer and in fairness I got maybe 15/20 sessions on it (if i miss a class or school closed for hols etc.) anyway its in a garage where I have about 4 feet on one side only! so its possible to work in a cramped spot actually it helped me with my kicks because if i missed I would kick a washing machine or a bike!!
    Anyway go crazy in the park who cares!?
    Went out for a run last night when the heavens opened and a savage wind lashed into my face only managed about 15 minutes I started roaring "Is that all you got .." etc and I realised there was someone taking shelter watching me !! all I could do was laugh.

    We don't have room in our house either and I'm getting a bag. I'll be putting up a bracket on the side wall of the house (we have a bit of space to the side) and taking the bag in when I'm finished using it (soggy punch bag is a pain in the hole). You could easily stick the bracket on the back wall instead of the side if you don't have room to the side. You can get the wall brackets in argos for around 40-50 euro I think.

    Okay, to anyone who does have a punching bag, how much room would you actually need for using one properly? Thinking of picking one up, and it LOOKS like enough space, but stuff like that always comes back to bite me in the ass.

    why not do an experiement.... got an old duffle bag and fill up with old carpets etc... and hang it, and work out on it, and that will allow you to see how much room you got, before you waste money...

    i reckon for punching , elbows only an area of 2mx2m for kicking probably 3mx3m would be ideal (just looking at my office size)

    Hmmm. Could probably handle punches, kicks and knees, but would get a bit cramped for kicks.
    Does hanging it off a wall bracket on the side of house make things awkward, or does it still work as well?
    Just in case the inside turns out too small.

    I made a spare bedroom into a training area, I have a six foot bag hanging from the ceiling. The room is about 3 meters wide and I guess I would use up to 3 meters lenght wise. Depending on the size and weight of the bag and where you hang it, you may have to some extra work. In might case I had to do a significant amount of reinforcing in the attic.

    There used to, and could still, be one of those in Malahide Park, I used to love running to find the next station. Mind you I was 11 or something. Just thinking about it now its kinda perfect for a bit of early morning training.

    Here's a park training plan.
    1. Get you bag. (and a hoodie, gots to have the hoodie!)
    2. Put it on your back and jog down to the Park.
    3. Lash it over the branch of a tree.
    4. Lamp the bag round for a while.
    5. Tie it round your waist and do a few laps.
    6. Pick it up and jog home.

    Training in the fresh morning air rocks, I'd pick it any day over man made light, reproduced air and queueing up. :)

    Hey OP,

    If you're driving around North Dublin and you see a man swinging from goalposts, trees, and running up and down with a variety of implements swinging from his arms, say hi.:D The park is the ideal place to train, my local is ****ty and hasn't even got monkey bars in the playground, but it has pitch markings, goalposts, and hills, lots of hills, so I get some good stuff going there. Dragging a medicine ball down isn't high on my agenda but why not? People look at me as though I'm a muppet but I tend to be too fvcked to notice. If you think you look stupid, go look at some people in Total Fatness watching Coronation Street on a treadmill at 2k per hour in a gym outfit they're afraid to get too sweaty- THEY look stupid.

    There are lots and lots of ideas on Crossfit.com but use your imagination too and you'll be set. Try tabatas for timing too if you really want to get knackered!

    Never a truer word.

    OP, be sure to wrap up well in the cold weather. I find covering up completely - long sleeves, gloves, hat, tracksuit trousers (not shorts) - in thin, windproof layers is best. And when you are wrapped up well it's even comfortable in really bad weather.

    As people said crossfit is great. Also, some nice routines here on RossTraining. You can do loads of stuff with no equipment too.

    The area we 're going to hang it up is solid brick, so it should be able to hold. For hanging it from the roof, whats best type of support to set up for it?

    Where do you guys recommend purchasing a bag from? Would you recommend it for overall conditioning, i.e., for someone not in to boxing as such, just general fitness?

    yeah a punch bag is a great way to work out.
    depending what your doing you may need a bit of
    room though.
    What type of training are you doing at the minute?

    Just weight training currently. Benching etc. Building up for the gaa season ahead.

    most decent sports shops would stock them.
    A punch bag has its benifits and would help upper body
    strength, but it would probably be an idea to get some
    help and ideas first of somebody thats into boxing or
    martial arts

    wraps, dont forget to wear wraps if you are going to be punching a bag for a few hours every week.
