Apologies if this has been asked before, I tried searching but to no avail.

I got my first motorbike a few weeks ago (yamaha - fzr 250)

Before this, I drove scooters for years. When it came to oil, I used to simply buy a bottle of 2 stroke oil, pour it in and bobs your uncle.....Any time it got low, i simply topped it up.

However, I'm not sure what to do with the new bike. Someone asked me about CHANGING the oil  Is this different than topping it up??

Im also unsure as to what oil to buy, as the bike is 2nd hand and I dont have any manuals etc.

And (rather embarrassingly) I cant find where the oil goes:eek:

Help would be greatly appreciated :o

OK, first off this is four-stroke. You don't stick in oil with the petrol  :)

My brother has an FZR 250 and we had terrible trouble locating a manual for it. I did find one online eventually, I'll see if I can locate it again.

Someone else may be better able to help you in terms of what types of oil to buy for what conditions.

As for putting oil in, you want to locate the sump - at the bottom of the cylinders. There will be a small white round window on one side of this. If you bring the bike up level, you should see the oil in the sump, and you will be able to tell if you have enough by the grades beside the window (it's tough to explain :)).

It's a four stroke so you only need to change the oil when servicing it. You'll see a nut at the bottom of the sump for letting oil out. They also have filters and crush washers that need replacing with the oil. check the oil level with either a dipstick or sightglass about once a week to ensure that none is being burnt or leaking somewhere. Someone here will probably explain it better than I can.

On average, how often should I be looking at an oil change?

first thing - find the oil cap.
usually on the right hand side of the engine, towards the rear of the section below the cylinders.
unscrew the cap, it will either have a dipstick on the inde or there will be a window below it to check the level.

consult the owner manual to see if the level is accurate when the bike is on its side or when its on the centre stand.

you should change the oil at the mnufacturers recommended intervals,
which is different for all bikes afaik.

Thanks for the help guys. Got a friend to check it out, and the oil looked like it was at the correct level and was clean enough. I think I'll get it done next time I get a service rather than attempting it myself.
