German/Czech Beer Cheap - Group buy for Xmas?

Well - to put it very briefly; If you happen to visit/live in Germany or the Czech Republic they sell the most beautiful beer so, so, SO cheaply - like circa 30 cent. for a 500ml bottle

How can I import some in a cost effective manner ?

Obviously once the Taxman takes an interest and the shipping is paid it won't be quite as cheap as if bought on the streets of Prague or Munich - but even still it has to be cheaper than the €2.40-2.90 charged by the thieving off-licenses - In fact just about every Centra/Spar has started stocking these as obviously the profit margin is immense  .

    - Finally it is of course cheaper to buy in bulk - and God himself knows that the spirit of Christmas was borne of beer ;) So who is with me to investigate a Boards.ie quality beer group buy ?

I'd happily take part in a group buy as I'm partial to a bit of Staropramen, especially Staropramen Red which you can't get here.

But I don't have time to investigate possibilities. So let me know how you get on.

I used to work in a Spar and if memory serves me right the mark up wasn't as huge as you might think maybe 25% on non reduced stuff (but this was/is standard on everything but the basics) reduced stuff sold at near 10% up on cost price. Just thank god you aren't a teenie bopper female . Wkd blue had a 150% mark up!

Spar has 17500 stores in 32 countries on five continents; I think that they have a little bargaining power with companies

IF that is the case then spar are being ripped off too. I was getting long necks of dutch heineken for 60cent a few weeks back in tescos, a long neck of german beers can be €2.50. So if these beers are 30cent there SOMEBODY is making a killing.

I would be on for a bulk buy if there was a way.

monkeyfudge- do you remeber when staropramen was a €1 beer a while back? I had them stocked up to the roof in my room at one stage!

I bought boxes and boxes of 50cl bottles of Budvar on the way back from France one time - had them stacked in the spare room...... Strangely their numbers diminshed rapidly - and my evenings [~all of them] became more boozy and mayhem filled until one day I reached for a beer that just was not there - cue rehab and an attempt to stay on the straight and narrow ;)

Can we live the dream once more - can we beat the system and import good beer cheaply for the good of all mankind ???

Going to France and bringing them in yourself in a van would be the cheapest way to do it. Otherwise it would be prohibitably expensive with tax and duties. Your still going to have to get some kind of importer to bring them in for you which will make them near enough the same price UNLESS you want to take a trip to Dublin castle and get yourself an import licence but as far as I know you will have to have a business to do this. And you dont make as much of a killing as you think on world beers!
