when he was small there was a toy called the goochi dolls or something. he used play with them and one of his neighbours gave him the nickname gooch as a result

I've heard a different description relating to some excess Flesh in the Nether-regions, but I won't go into detail here.

ya i think gooch refers to skin between two areas on a male anatomy...but dunno if he got his nickname some other innocent way. i kind of chuckle everytime i hear marty morrissy et all calling him that. i remember one game way back where martin carney (legend of crazy talk that noone really listens to) kept refering to him as "graham gooch cooper".... there was a english cricketer called graham gooch obviuosly martin was bit mixed u as to what sport he was watching that day!!

That is spot on, I think he got the doll for Christmas, I guess maybe it was a "Gucci" Doll of Gucci the Italian fashion and leather goods label. I also heard another one once that he actually looked like the doll when he was younger or someit like it  The Doll is the key to his name.

Kieran Donaghy "Star" got his name from a jacket he wore regularly in School that had a big yellow star on the back which he got while on Holidays in Florida.

It was an Orlando Magic jacket - Shaquille O'Neal's first team which made them quite popular for a while.

i heard before that it was that people in kerry thought he was a 'sharp' footballer and that gucci was a sharp brand of clothes, so they called him gooch

i remember thinking at them time that it was the worst reason for a name ever

    You heard wrong

Its funny how naive people can be and the way a story can be totaly off the mark, some people probably actually believe it though
