Real 59s came with plain maple tops, not flame maple AFAIK.

It may just be me but there's no way I would pay that sort of money for an old Les Paul. Now, if it was Jimmy Page's or someone like that, I could understand but a random LP? Not a hope.

The seller does say 'appears to be a 59' so maybe he's wrong. The components look old - them resistors are 60's. Assuming it's relatively genuine, it should fetch a few bob.

35 grand for a SECOND HAND les paul?!!

For that kind of money you could probably buy a NEW les paul in waltons..;):D

This is a brand new one too ;)

There are some seriously good relics out there. I'd want a singed certificate of authenticity from Gibson before handing out that sort of money (and even then I wouldn't hand over that sort of money :p )

Hey, come on, you didn't have to tell it like it is :)

Incorrect. They most definitely came with flame tops. That's why they're so coveted.

Gimmie one of those 91 Ibanez UV777s tbh. Now that's what I'd call a nice vintage item. :D

But it's not vintage... It's only 15 years old...

Somehow i dont think theyll be selling for $250,000 in 30 yrs time...but i bet theyll play better than a 59 LP :D;)

    Nice one Voodoo! ;)

Wouldn't say no to that guy either.

Well this is me we're talking about, might even stretch to something from the 80's, but that'd be as vintage as it'd get.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

No, by definition, it's only vintage if it's over 25 years old

No interest in vintage guitars TBH. A good guitar is a good guitar, and an old guitar is an old guitar.

If its good its good, but a 50yr old guitar is more than likely a rusty old piece of crap...:p (IMO;) )

Ahhh, I have been misinformed. I thought their desirability was a result of the endless sustain though... or has Nigel Tufnel lead me astray too? :p

Nigel would never do such a thing! What are you suggesting?

That was the man who taught me to solo! :D

The game has been raised............. > http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160062296596&ssPageName=ADME:B:EF:UK:2

Different guitar but what a price tag! You'd wanna be a serious collector for this one!

If it doesn't have the original strings, they can feck off!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

There was a guy selling a late 70s bass on ebay with original strings a while back. Quite disgusting, I thought, but some folks on talkbass were quite enthused about the prospect of 30 year old strings :o

Let's face it, if it doesn't have the original strings then technically it's not 100% original parts :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

    You're a face.

I might keep my old strings and sell them... relic'd strings, git yer original 1995 strings here :p

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Did you just call me a face? You forget yourself sir! (plus I can ban you now)

Well, people buy anything these days. "Original strings from Japan! Never been played (much)!"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

    I went there :D

All this "original" lark is a bit much. Yeah, there's mojo but do people really believe instrument making hasn't moved on in, what, almost 60 years? Would you go on holiday in a 60 year old plane? Me arse! :p

The concorde was getting to be that old...

    Exactly.
