Still no Al Jazeera on ntl (3 weeks since launch)

Has anyone heard anything on the grapevine as to when or if upc are going to carrry the English service of Al Jazeera on their network?
I know when it was launched UPC responded to questions from RTE that they "were in talks" which is usually a way of getting a bit of time if you've been caught off foot.
It's been three weeks since the launch. I know Al Jazeera are really keen to have networks carry them so I can't imagine there's a huge cost involved if any.
Are we all been forced to move to Sky Digital? With the arrival of Channel 4 this morning there doesn't seem to be the old disadvantage and at least Sky answer their phones.

There are plenty of other channels I'd rather see on NTL before Al Jazeera. As always with NTL, don't hold your breath.

Maybe we should start a list of channels that are readily available that we believe should be on a package calling itself "Go Digital Max".
Mine for starters would obviously be Al Jazeera English with great British journalists like Sir David Frost and Rageh Omar, but maybe I'm a bit of a current affairs junkie, what would your wishlist be jdempsey?

I can list about 3400 channels I get free on Satellite that arn't on UPC. Why pick on Al Jazzera?
What about the following channels either English or at least 1/4 English?
    NileTV International
    CCTV 4
    CCTV 9
    Arriang TV
    Dr Dish
    Russia Today
    VOA TV
    C Span TV
    BBC World TV
    DW TV
    France 24
NCTV (Farsi / English, lots of films)

Is there an accurate list someplace of what channels are on UPC on the best NTL or Chorus line up they have? I'm presuming that all areas will eventually have the same line up and Chorus MMDS the same 120 ch lineup as NTL MMDS.

Because he wants to watch it?

I think it would cool to have. I am sick of the one sided war on terror.

My reason entirely, think it would be good to have those mentioned by Watty as well, the Chinese CCTV is quite good from what I've seen on other peoples' Sky.
UPC do actually have BBC World, which is something. Is it possible to get this from Astra or would one lose it if moving to Sky?

During night BBC News24 and BBC World TV use same news.

BBC are not allowed to but BBC World TV on Astra2/Eurobird in case anyone in UK watches it :) (Adverts).

They do have it FTA on almost every other satellite. I think I can easily get it on four sats inc 19E and 13E.

I can see where you're coming from Paulm. But personally I'll take what we have as opposed to bin Laden's mouthpiece any day.;)

It isn't at all Bin Laden's Mouthpiece. That's a very distorted view of reality. They just report. Then the US & UK & everone else carries the same tape, recorded from Al Jazzera.

Not the place for this discussion, but how many argue that CNN et al are mouthpieces of the West, but when the AJ is accused of the same people get the hump? Goose, gander, etc.;)

I'm going to take that as "No, I've never seen it, and I'm not going to in case it changes my viewpoint" then

Take it whatever way you like. It boils down to two cultures. I'll take the West any day - no matter what.;) :D

This is a fairly unbiased article from 2001 ( http://www.csmonitor.com/2001/1015/p1s3-wosc.html ), but the key sentence here is:

"But it isn't just about scoops and access. Some analysts warn that bin Laden's carefully scripted televised statements are a source of inspiration for militant Muslims and could spark instability that threatens US allies such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, among others"

That instability will quickly filter down to people like you and I in the West. Are you prepared to accept this and the economic ramifications that it brings? Many of us gladly accept the mighty dollar from our US employers. Why is it that, as is usually the case in Ireland, double standards apply ad nauseum? If thine hand offends you then cut it off. What about your job - or employer? Or their country of origin? Note also the reference to freedom of speech and the crowded theatre. Interesting analogy. Lord Haw Haw comes to mind.

These statements are carried by all the US networks.

The "Christian Science Monitor" is a VERY biased source. Nor would most European and many American Christians regard Christian Science as other than a sect.

    From http://www.4truth.net/site/c.hiKXLbPNLrF/b.1129657/k.BD34/CultSect_Overview.htm

Major Cults and Sects in North America

    • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons)
    • Jehovah's Witnesses
    • United Pentecostal Church (Oneness Pentecostalism)
    • Unitarian Universalist Association
    • Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS)/Community of Christ
    Christian Science
    • Unity School of Christianity
    • International Church of Christ
    • The Way International
    • Church of Scientology International
    • Baha'i Faith
    • Nation of Islam

I watch BBC World, NileTV International, DW TV, Russia Today, IBA Ch33 (english news from Israel), CNN, Sky News, Euronews, CNBC, Bloomberg, MSNBC, RTE News, TV3 News. I also read the english section of teletext on Tunisa Ch7. Occasionally Irainian News, Chinese and Cuban.

I used to watch Fox occasionaly till it became a Pay TV only channel.
Some of these channels are VERY biased. Al Jazeera isn't particularly biased, nor particularly a BenLaden Mouth piece.

Fox News makes its cousin channel Sky News seem excellent!

Point taken. But, given that you say it is VERY biased, overall that article is pretty even-handed, given the time of publication, in it's description of Al Jazeera. Many of the Channels you quote above would make the 'one-sided view of the war on terror' seem very fair indeed.

Western values and behaviours are often cricticised (and sometimes rightly so) but at least we CAN criticise - the fundamental basis of the wide ranging freedoms which we enjoy.

Al Jazeera has as many "eastern enemies" as well as "western ones".

No Middle east Muslim country has a Open Society where critism of government is tolerated. AJ is careful not to make critism of its host government. The only M.E. Country where Muslims have a democratic vote for a real parilament that runs the country (rather than a talking shop of Dictator run state) is :

One of the headlines/talking-points on Fox News on Christmas day was: "Would Jesus shop at WalMart?"

You'd swear they were taking the piss of themselves.
