    Hi all,

My laptop keeps turning the screen off.

If I close the laptop and open it up again it comes back on again.

Can anyone help me fix the problem?

Does it need to go back and get fixed as h/w problem or is it a s/w problem??

    Thanks

Does this happen when you close the lid?

When I close the lid and open it up again.

The screen comes back on again for less than a min and goes blank again

Have you checked the screen saver settings ? Does it happen on both battery and mains? have you tried to wake it up using the keyboard first, before closeing the lid? How long before this happens is the laptop powered up?

Its on mains. Screen saver comes on after 60 mins

Only stays on for a couple of secs.

I have to close the lib to turn screen back on.

Its turning off on the log on page.

It's likely going into standby. See the 4 LEDs on the right hand side at the bottom of the screen? Is the first one on steady or is it dimming in and out?

The solution to your problems will be in Start > Control Panel > Power anyways

They are all set to never.

Is the note book getting warm? If you have a monitor try hooking this up and see if it is happening with the monitor.

I have it connect up to a monitor and it works fine on the monitor but blank screen on the laptop

I will turn it off for a couple of hours and check it later

Possible problem with either the LCD or video card. There is no way of known for sure what the problem is with out a spare. You could try running the dell diagnostics ,instructions can be found on the dell site as to how to invoke it. I think that it is F12. But I found it not to be too good in finding problems.

I have an 8600 too, and recently took it apart to clean the internals, tighten up the loose screen. The monitor and backlight connection all travel inside a fabric insulator through the left hand hinge, and then click onto the mainboard's connector. There is no retention mechanism, it just sits there. So I would imagine yours needs to be reseated. The symptom you've described of opening the laptop and closing would seem to indicate this is the issue.

I hope it will be ok now.

Yeah its just loose. Had something similar happen an old Gateway. Next time it turns off, try tapping the area where the connection is at the hinges on the laptop and see if it comes back on without closing it.

I was on to Dell and they said the button that turns the screen on and off is faulty and the motherboard will need to be replaced.

They are to ring me with a price tomorrow.

Would it be best just to get a new laptop (Not dell) than getting it fixed??
