    I know, I know....

    Anyway, http://www.siliconrepublic.com/news/news.nv?storyid=single7433 has the details.

What kind of developments can we anticipate from UPC in the Irish market in 2007?

We’re going to launch personal video recorder (PVR) services in the first half of next year and a high-definition set-top box in the second half of next year. We will certainly begin rolling out video on demand services in 2008.

    We'll wait and see.

I have been waiting since the first quarter of 2005 for this, I hope it is true this time but I will not hold my breath.

    Yawn...

Knowing the track records of Cablelink / NTL Ireland / Chorus I wouldn't be sitting around waiting for it.

By the time a PVR is released, you probably would have enough money to buy a nice MythTV or Windows Media Center PC and no subscription (which I'm sure UPC will have) and far greater flexibility.

Won't record one ch while you watch another on Digital Cable and have perfect playback without a UPC provided box.

You can only really do as you suggest on FTA Digital satellite or it you lucky enough to get Freeview and DTT Trial

    yep,
its only possible to watch one / record another with 2 subscriptions.
which hopefully wont work out cheaper than the ntl pvr.
there smarter than that, arent they????

    er...

I'm on MMDS so I'd definitely be interested in a PVR as at present if I record something I have to watch it at the same time, and timed recordings are a complicated pain in the ass.

although with C4 now on Sky I'm getting tempted to just go for Sky+

not sure what the "er..." is for?

Not true, you can always record multiple channels off the analogue signal. I know a person who has 5 tuners and can record 5 analogue channels at the same time and at no additional cost.

Or you can record of Digital (100+ channels) and any number of analogue channels (17 channels) at the same time.

Or you can pay just €7.50 for a mirror sub and get a second digital box to record from, will probably still be cheaper then UPC's PVR sub.

As for picture quality you are technically correct, but in practice I've never seen any degradation in picture quality on my Tivo versus NTL direct on my 32" Sony CRT.

The benefit of a media centre is that you can also store your entire music collection, photo collection and DVD/movie/tv collection in Divx/Xvid formats on the server and have streaming front end boxes around the house (such as Xbox 360, upcoming HD media centre extenders, Sonos, Squuezebox and slingbox) that run off it, allowing multi room music and TV.
