    Hi

I have just connected to skype for the first time. I have a US Robotics 9600a phone. I can hear callers no problem, but the sound quality from my end seems to be very poor. It sounds like there is a lot of feedback/crackling from my phone. I've tried lowering the input volume for the phone but this hasnt helped....can anybody tell me what i should do???

    thanks

Try with a basic earpiece / microphone plugged into sound card. If you have a NAT/Firewall forward the magic number port in Skype settings to IP of your PC and untick the port 80/443 which are likely blocked inward.

We use Skype on a PC (wired) using Mic and HiFi speakers and two Laptops on WiFi simply using the built in speakers & mic.

Arn't there round holes somewhere on the edge for 3.5mm jack Microphone (€5 on stalk in Maplin) and earphone?

I presume your laptop has also built in speakers and microphone. Go to Skype settings and check which "sound card" is being used.

XP has a built in Firewall. If you use WiFi and /or have a box that connects you to the Internet that has more than one Ethernet socket, then that has a firewall too.

Try skype without the US Robotics plugged in when you boot. It should then work on builtin mic and speakers automatically.

    Without the USB handset
Check Skype settings and what is used for in and out.

Double click your loudspeaker icon in task tray to see mixer. Pick Recording controls. Make sure Mic is enabled or NOT muted. (Soem SW the check box has opposite sense) Turn Mic boost on in Advanced, if it exists.

The laptop will have a built microphone behind a tiny hole somewhwere.
