New Laptop problem

I got a new laptop over the weekend, an asus A6TC. It has a turion 64x2, 1gig of ram, 100gb hd.
However it seems to be running a lot slower than it should, and the task manager says its CPU usage is 20/30/40/50 percent, even when little or nothing is running.

    Anyone have any solutions?

    Thanks

What processes are consuming the most CPU? You can get this from Task Manager.

You could check the power settings in the control panel ot see if theres any power saving software running. When it's plugged in it should run be able to run at up to 100%. You could try running some benchmark software and see if that gets it up to 100%, something like SuperPi

nipped home and checked task manager at lunchtime.
no programs running. only startup program is avg, and it wasn't scanning.

CPU kept flicking from ~5% to ~30%

Top processes were: System idle process (flicking from 25 to 75) and "ASWL2K.exe" which was flicking from 0 up to 75 or 80. Google has informed me this is a wifi utility

ASWL2K suggests this is an older, Windows 2000 program, maybe? I would check the Asus website for updated programs and drivers for your system.
See if that gets you anywhere.
