hey there,im really excited about the wii but i would like to know if the wifi is free on it and whether you can access the internet or just the nintendo site.
is the wii controller(the snes style one not the sensor one) needed to play the downloadable games or is it optional?

    thanks alot:)

I think you can just subscribe to channels (weather, news etc.). The Opera browser is being released separately to allow you to browse the net properly.

And yes, the wii remote (turned sideways to mimic a joypad) is used to play VC games.

You can play some games with the Wiimote controller but where that does not have the buttons, the classic one (Snes style with analog sticks) will be required or the Gamecube controller in some cases (you can use classic anywhere you can use the Gamecube one as far as I know except for Gamecube games).

in that case should i buy a gamecube controller instead of wiimote?

No, you should buy a Gamecube controller instead of a Classic Controller. However, classic controller is only going to be about 20 euro, and that might be cheaper than any GC controller you'd find.

EDIT: Yay! Mein hundredth post :D

Yeah like penguin88 said, buy a Gamecube controller or a Classic controller to play virtual console games.

You will not be able to play Wii games with a Gamecube controller (with a few exceptions, ie Smash Bros)

so......will playing games online for it be free?

    Not sure what you mean.

If you mean, will retro games like Mario etc... be free, then no, you have to buy nintendo points (fo' reel $$$) to purchase them.

If you mean, will you be able to play games you have bought, such as a COD3* online for free, then the answer is unclear. I don't think Nintendo have announced yet if they will charge a sub for online gaming.

*As of yet, no games are online enabled, COD3 was just a game I used for reference.

Nintendo have specified that they will not charge for online play.
That however does not stop other companies charging for online play.
And you do have to pay for your own internet connection of course!

here is a really stupid question

Are things like controllers and accessories region based?

For instance will the nunchuk and classic controller from PLAYASIA work with my PAL Wii?

I know the games wont but what about the little extras like cables?

Honestly im thinking now that this is the most stupid question in the world but I just need info before I risk the taxation and order them.

Nah, the controller and games are region encoded, but the accessories should work no matter where they are from.

I'm fairly sure that's not true. It does just use standard Bluetooth after all (a computer can even pick up its signal).

I'd say everythin will work fine, apart fro the games.

The wii-mote is not region locked, the console itself and the software are, and the wii-points are also regional, but the controllers etc are all universal.
