Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

S&G Clubs - universities

    Hi,

Firstly I should introduce myself. I am Martin Whelan, and I am working on a project for the UK based Student Scout and Guide Organisation (www.ssago.org.uk) and after some help please! SSAGO is an umbrella for university based Scout and Guide Clubs, i.e. a university society.

SSAGO is 40 next year and part of the work, we are trying to contact as many former members as possible, and secondly find out more about the past history of the organisation. One of the things that I am very keen to discover more about is the Scout and Guide Clubs in the Republic of Ireland, and the structures that supported it as I am lead to believe that all the groups are currently inactive. I am aware of clubs being active in the past at NUI Maynooth, NUI Galway, TC Dublin, UC Dublin and UC Cork, as well as a national set up called the National Co-ordinating Committee and gradsag for the graduate members.

I would love to hear from anyone who is a former and/or can shed any light on the these groups.

    YiS

    Hi Martin,

I've never been involved in any club like this, and wasn't aware of one when I was in Maynooth (1999-2002) or Trinity (2002-2004), but I have heard of the one in Cork of course, but their webpage appears to have vanished :( I was also aware of your one, thanks for the link, I'm looking forward to checking it out.

If there are any societies like this still about, I'm definitely interested too.

When I was in UCD (2000-2003) the Scouting & Guiding Soc seemed to only have just gone dormant or it was very low level.

I did meet two guys one from Maynooth and one from TCD in the autumn of 2001 in Bath, England at a SSAGO event. SSAGO had a new club at the time in Belfast, so I was keen to ensure that there some mutual support for the new group. Unfortunately I think it all died a death very quickly.

I am aware of groups in Cork, Dublin (TCD and UCD), Limerick, Galway and Maynooth, along with a group for graduates called gradsag and a national committee called NCC. I have come across the Cork website several times, and have found it through a cached site.

    Thanks for the help anyway

I joined Ucc in 1999 and was involved in the French and Spanish societies and remember going to the Clubs and Societies office and seeing the space for a Scout and Guide Society but I never had the chance to start it up again as that's what would have been needed - someone to start it up.
People would have joined the Hillwalking club or one of the many others there.

Looking back on it now, it's a pity as there would have been money given to the club if it had any sort of a plan for activities and could well be a great club if it got going.

    Johmo.
