Just wondering if people can get away from these as the last two times ive played cash iv been doing well and and then it all goes in to find out he has the higher set. If theres no flush or straight draw to ppl think it's always all getting in.

    What about in tourney's aswell?

Yep I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on this. I blew my stack last nite in the fitz on a set of twos. (Who said twos never lose?) Flop was J 8 2 Villian had pocket jacks. I knew i was behind and yet continued to put money in!!!!!!

It's usually a mistake to fold a set. Don't do it.

    Cardshark - Don't fold sets

    Ever ?
when a tightish player is betting pot post flop and after the turn on a board that has no flush or straight draw do u always automatically call with bottom set ?

Most of the time they will have top pair / two pair / overpair. Its just unfortunate to run into a higher set.

Ages ago I had lost a fortune (related to the stakes) loosing set over set over and over again. I too thought long and hard about getting away from them in general. With a very good read on a nit one can get defo get away from them - but this is going to be very rare. Ive never been in a situation with a good enough read to fold a set and possibly never will. So, like the others say, never fold a set when a set is the nuts unless you 'know' the other guy has a set!

And sometimes the poker gods will rebalance the world and you'll have the higher set.

    you have an out. ;)

I've never been in this situation, so the chances of me having a lower set and folding are quite remote. On a drawless board I can't imagine folding a set, I pretty much don't bother with pairs lower than 4s anyway so that lowers the likelihood.

On a positive note in all this doom and gloom thread, I busted a guy in a €800 pot last week with set over set. woot.

I once only called a river bet with the A high flush in a cash game, to see a straight flush shown down :D Given, there was 4 to a straight flush on the board :o

To say never fold sets is a bit of an overstatement. Perhaps in shallow stacked 50-100 BB games, we should never fold sets on dry boards. However, if we are playing deep stacked with say 500+ bbs, we need to change our thinking.

The only 500BB+ games I've played have been live, where the players are generally loose terrible which again means don't fold sets.

GRRR opposite thing happened to me last weekend. there was a 4578d flop, I had the Ace. One person before me raised all in for 60xBB, the next player raised all in for about 200xBB, I agonised, folded as the 200BB player had good stats, 60BB dude had the 3 and the 200BB had the 9. No 6d on the river and we had one angry peeko!

I was involved in a hand against halfbaked in a tournament at the weekend where at one stage i was set over overpair then finished set under set. Never was there an all in during this hand. Thats restraint for ya boys!

That's cos Peter's far too tight to value bet top set on that board. He had the gaul to tell me he put you on JJ. That's why he raised the flop and called the turn :)
