Corona with lime(?)

So I've heard some stories that the lime is there to keep flies out when corona is drank in Mexico (which frankly I think is bullsh|t). I've also heard that its there to make the beer more palatable, because in Mexico its a bottom of the range beer (which I think is more believeable)

So how do people like to drink corona (if at all) with lime or without? Have ye any other interpretations of the lime in the neck myth?

Personally I like it both ways, but would favour the lime, for the citrusy zing like!;)

I'd certainly be more inclined to believe that it's there to mask the taste - Corona with lime is marginally less horrible than without.

I don't think I'd actually drink it if it didn't have the lime in it.

    I love it with Lime.
Actually, I should start adding lime to all beer I drink.

The beer itself is just so bland it needs the lime to have some form of taste.

A nice slice of lemon is also very nice in the German wheatbeers. Though they can generally be drunk without it and still have some form of taste.

They have plenty of taste with out them!

I heard - was there a thread on this before? - that because Corona is in a clear bottle it is more open to taint from conditions in transport and the lime is to mask that.

The UV radiation can penetrate clear/ green glass bottles and develop some off flavours; brown bottles will reduce it but not eliminate it. Although such beers where never meant to be stored for any length of time.

GF uses lime in Miller, after trying it in a Corona she liked the idea. Then again you'd need something in a Miller to give it some taste!

drank corona for the first time 3 weeks ago in england the lager in the pub was shtie and i liked it very much very easy on the tongue with the lime in it
but do you leave the lime in the neck or do you push it down into the bottle which is best?

I for one have nearly choked on a lime after leaving it in the neck.

I used to do the thing where you stick your thumb over the bottle, and turn it upside down, so the lime goes through all the beer.

Backfired a few times, when i sprayed beer all over myself.

It's too bleedin sweet without the lime, thats why you need the lime, to get rid of that horrible sweetness, i used to hate Corona, now i can stand it once there's lime in it...just about.

It's an alright beer, but I wouldn't drink it without the lime.

I just squeeze the lime against the inside of the neck with my little finger when it's in the bottle. It's a much safer way of doing things. ;)

Oblivious: Is your sig big enough for ya?

I got turned onto this when I was on holiday in Arizona awhile ago, Corona is very popular down there, being close to Mexico and all. I found when it is cold and has a lime in it then it you cannot go wrong, it tastes nice and is refreshing. But if you drink it without the lime (especially when it gets close to room temperature) it starts to taste nasty like Budweiser.

I drink it with the lime wedged in the neck of the bottle. That way the citric acid & beer doesn't mix for long.

I have never been to mexico, but I heard that it is never drank like that traditionally in Mexico. Tourists/people drinking the beer in other parts of the world invented the practice. From a marketing aspect this would make sense. From a drinking perspective it improves the beer. It is sad that it is priced higher that other just-as-crap beers.

Tried corona for the first time about 5 years ago while in Spain and the barman said that the lime was to keep the flies out but it just became common practice because people liked the taste.

Lime works great with corona but I sometimes put lemon in other bottled beers for the same effect. Lemon in a corona just isn't nice!

Yep, Lime in Corona and Sol for me, tastes great, especially the first few hits after the lime has gone in :)

I don't drink it that often, usually during the Summer if I'm having a night in a club or late bar. :)

First had Corona in Canada nearly 20 years ago, before it was available here. It remains to this day the only beer I've ever paid for, tasted and handed straight back to the barman. It's some of the worst muck masquerading as beer I've ever had the misfortune to allow past my lips. Was briefly in Mexico a couple of years ago and drank Tecate there. Never heard of it before, and while it wouldn't ever feature on my all-time favourites list, it wasn't too bad, and it wasn't served with a slice of anything.

Love it, love it, love it.

With lime, with lemon or without. My favourite beer.

The natural sweetness of beer is balanced by the bitterness added by hops.

Mexican beers have very little hop bitterness, resulting in a sweeter tasting beer than consumers in most of the world are used to. Adding lemon or lime to the beer adds acidity, which helps to balance the sweetness of the beer, in the absence of higher hop bitterness.

Translation: The slice of lime is simply there to make an unpalatable beer more palatable.

    I voted: corona is rank.

    Likewise: Corona is rank.

One of the worst beers on the planet. I'm amazed by the take-up... this beer is travelling half-way across the planet, with a simple marketing gimmick to keep it going.

On it's own, it's a vile beer, with corn adjuncts festering in every sip.

While everyone should buy and drink the beer that they personally prefer, some discussions on taste are not entirely subjective. For example, if you like the taste of lime, try Harps with lime. A poor beer, but less offensive than Corona, that will taste the same, or better, with lime and does not need to travel around the planet.

Virtually any blonde lager beer (American-Style or otherwise) is a marked improvement on Corona, with or without lime.
