If you google sunday times ireland it is always the first one that comes up, it comes online around midnight every Saturday night. There is talk of a dedicated Irish site for 2007. Heres hoping.

aye, I always end up googling 'sunday times ireland' because navigating my way around the main site to the Irish content can often seem impossible.

NewsCorp do own thetimes.ie; but it just brings you to their global daily edition... they also own www.sunday-times.ie, but it just goes to the general Sunday Times page (which makes so much sense that it stops making sense)

Ah, no. It kind of complements their current lack of investment in Irish business journalism.

And ‘here’s hoping’ sums up the hope for improving the above.

Monument they (ST) have put the feelers out for new business journalists as they have with business and property advertising people also.

I see also that their main site is showing regular Sky news bulletins.

I was sure I read in Phoenix about cut backs in the Business team at the ST, but can't find reference to it now... not sure where I read it now.
What I did find in my search of Phoenix was reference to the cutbacks at News International (due to the underperformance of advertising), which have meant that the Oirish ST has been unable to staff itself as well as they had hoped...
Either way I can't see how the ST picking up extra staff will make any difference to their online offerings; that's generally the last area of an operation given a facelift in this country.

"Either way I can't see how the ST picking up extra staff will make any difference to their online offerings"

Flo, who said that extra staff was going to improve their "online offerings" ?

Another thing, dont take everything in Pheonix as gospel my good man.

Well you said there was talk of a dedicated Irish site; I was commenting that the additional staff in the business and property section won't do much for a new site (which is what this thread is about), so I won't hold my breath for any proper site appearing just yet.
Another thing, dont take everything in Pheonix as gospel my good man.

Thanks for the advice. There are few things I read that I take as gospel, the fact is, however, that there has been a downturn in advertising revenue in the UK, and for British-owned media outlets with Irish operations that's obviously going to have a knock on effect for here... if the purse-strings need to be tightened in the Sunday Times (UK) you can be sure they'd look to tighten them at the Sunday Times (Irl)... even if the later were making money they'd do it to maximise profit and try and reduce "waste"

Okay, all of a sudden the Sunday Times has changed it's website and once again the Irish Edition has become almost impossible to find. Any suggestions anyone?

Would someone please explain to me why anybody would buy the strange weird odd version of THE (LONDON) SUNDAY TIMES........?
Why, why oh why, in heaven's name, would anyone buy a British paper where the edition is restricted to the Republic of Ireland only written by Irish (or British who live here) journalists with news through their eyes of what is happening here?

When I buy Le Monde/Liberation I want to know what French readers are saying about Ireland to THEIR readers. To me this is logical. And please do not respond with all the commercial tripe.......

If I buy The Irish Times in Bruxelles or Madrid I want to know what my fellow irish are reading in Dublin and what is being told to them about an event in Bruxelles or madrid or anywhere else, for that matter

Perhaps I'm stupid to think like this but at least The Observer does serve me?

(and now a sneaky question does reader know where the French rugby team are staying?

No sure I follow what you are saying tbh.

A common language, location and history would have a lot to do with it.

English newspapers have always sold here. Indeed, papers like the Daily Express had Dublin editions until the 1920's, long before Murdoch and co set up Irish editions of their publications in the 1990's. Print technology also helps, as does a network of local offset printers. PDF'ing a typeset copy from London is handy too.

But as I pointed out when Ireland on Sunday was submerged into The Mail on Sunday, it narrows the read for those who traditionly bought a British paper, because it was British.

AFAIK, provincial content has not yet been dealt with as part of the Times' recent website changes. It's down the list of priorities for the moment. You could put the question to Sarah Carey - http://www.sarahcarey.ie/ - who posts her sunday col on her GUBU blog.

That’s a strange idea, if you were going to contact anybody why not contact the paper its self?

given that the site relaunched this week and was actually down because of the unexpected traffic levels, i very much doubt you'll receive a reply from anyone within the sunset times. which is why i linked to one of their jouronos instead.

Yeah, the Scottish and other editions aren't there either.

Aye, but with Sarah Carey being a columnist I very much doubt she's in the office all that much, if at all... as a matter of fact, I remember her not knowing why her column wasn't in the site a few weeks ago.

Kathy Foley left a comment with me saying what everyone has been saying here anyway - they've not yet updated the provincial editions of their website to go along with their general overhaul.

Since this weekend the full Irish news content of each edition is now online at a dedicated Irish section.

Help! Why have websites become more and more annoying?!

I just searched for an Irish story on sundaytimes.co.uk, and tried clicking on it. The website simply refuses to accede to my request - it keeps asking me to sign up (for free) to some nonsense instead of directing me to the page I want! Degas and ballet is NOT what I'd searched for. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.

I keep telling them I DON'T want to subscribe but they don't seem to get the message - isn't there a law that says you only have to tick the 'no thank you' box ONCE? I feel bullied!

Looks like they're forcing me to sign up to their service in order to see the article. The problem is, they're not saying it. What they keep telling me is that their service is great cause it's free, yada yada yada, they're pretending they're doing me a favour! Oh how annoying.

If they don't want us to read the articles for free or without signing in, fine, but they should say so, not pretend we can access them!!!!!!

End of rant. I'm over it now, just won't ever buy that paper again!

Sunday Times is now behind a paywall at http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/

It costs €1.50 for 24 hour access or €3 a week.

There's a very limited amount of preview articles, beyond those you must subscribe to access articles.

There shouldn't be any choice to register for free -- if you seen it, you could have found an error. Are you sure it did not ask you to pay?

Yes that makes sense, thanks! I did come to realise that after many attempts, I'm probably not used to how these websites work.

Point remains though, to my mind it should be clear on the website that that's the case. I have no problem with them asking people to pay.

My problem is that they shouldn't allow you to do a search (or show you the website as if you could access the articles) - they should make you pay first, then allow you to search/browse. Simple & straightforward. Not muddled and annoying! :)

If they don't allow you to search first then how would you know that they have articles worth paying for on the topic you are searching for.
