Travel with a Laptop

When I was in the airport the other day I thought I say a sign saying that laptops can be carried onboard, but they don't count towards your hand luggage limit of one bag? But I wasn't really paying attention. Now it turns out I'm off somewhere shortly and I want to bring a laptop with me.

Its probably airline specific.

Northwest allows you to carry one piece of luggage on board the aircraft plus a purse or briefcase or laptop computer or small backpack. The carry-on luggage must be of a size and shape to allow for storage in overhead compartments or underneath the seat in front of you.

Unfortunately it is not airline specific. Since the new hand baggage rules came into force throughout the EU on November 6th., a laptop counts as an item of hand luggage. One item of hand luggage is allowed per person.

You may carry a laptop but not another bag. However you may carry the laptop inside another piece of hand luggage, hence legally circumventing the rules.
The laptop must however be removed from the bag for separate screening at security.

Thanks that clears that up. I was asked to take the laptop out. Though they were ok with me having a large camera bag in addition to the bag with the laptop.
