Printing On Regular DVDs

Has anyone here ever tried printing on regular DVDs (silver finish) using an Inkjet printer designed for use on printable CD/DVDs? If you did, what kind of results did you get? All I really need to print is a simple monocrome reference number.

A second question - has anyone here used the small thermal DVD/CD printers? The main problem with them seems to be that one is restricted to printing in certain areas of the disk. This is the kind of printer I'm refering to ...

LightScribe seems like a good idea, however the dvds I want to print on have been produced on a dvd recorder (transfers from Sky+) ... i.e. not on a PC

Any other comments would be welcome

Printable DVDs tend to have a rough, absorbent surface that the ink can bond to - normal ones don't. The end result that I've seen is that the results can look brilliant when you pull the disk out of the printer, but that it'll smudge if you so much as look at it as the ink doesn't dry. Having said that, if you left it for a few hours, and let the ink dry undisturbed, it might work... but even then I suspect it'll come unstuck in little pieces with very little effort.
