i am in range for 3 of the transmitters

thinking of trying them to see which gives the best reception

question is, do they all transmit the bbcs utv, ch4?? its not mentioned on the pages

None of the transmitters on the map transmit any UK channels.

Click on Mike Browne's link for transmitter info in Northern Ireland which transmit the UK channels.

None of them. They are Irish transmitters and transmit the four Irish channels. The British terrestrial channels are broadcast off separate masts in Northern Ireland. In northern areas of the republic and certain high ground midland areas you should be able get them with a directional antenna on a high mast. You'll notice a lot of older single houses in Meath/Kildare will have a big directional antenna pointing north (Enniskillen I think). I used to live in a tall house In north east Galway that could get a reasonable signal like that.

Prior to Cable/MMDS TV there were a lot of deflector systems that acted as signal repeaters but that was clamped down as it was illegal.

Some are still running with temporary licence till DTT starts but often quality is rotten.
Get FTA satellite for 8 to 10 Free BBC, 5 free ITV, Film4 and others (no C4 till 2008)

    thanks for the replys lads

    i am in meath

my problem is poor tv3 and tg4, i was hoping to try one of the other transmitters. but not if i loose bbc's and utv

so can i just fit another uhf antenna just for picking up an irish transmitter, and leave the original alone.

Its possible youre getting RTE on VHF (Kippure ?) and the reason TV3/4 are bad is because theyre on UHF

Or maybe you get RTE from Three Rock but your RTE aerial is only Group A ?

Yes if you use a diplexer to combine them

getting bbc1,2, utv and ch4 crystal clear, rte 1 and 2 are perfect too

just tg4 and tv3 are bad, and get worse depending on the weather

antenna is horizontal polarised, (i never posted a pc, you must be confusing another thread), antenna is huge its approx 8 foot long, about 25years old, has 20 x-shaped elements (one element is missing, bloody birds)

At a rough guess it sounds like a group A horizontal aerial picking up Divis and also picking up Three Rock. Which would be why TV3 and TG4 are not receivable. That is possible in parts of east Meath.

To get an idea of what's happening, could you find out what channels (frequencies) your stations are tuned in on?

note- i can get tv3 and tg4, but nasty picture, crackly sound, and changes with the weather

    frequencies?- sure

    bbc2 ch 27(519.25)
    utv ch 24(495.25)
    ch4 ch 21(471.25)
    rte1 ch 5 (183.18)
    rte2 ch 8 (207.31)
    tv3 ch 62 (799.18)
    tg4 ch 59 (775.18)

Your BBC/UTV/CH4 is coming from Divis (Belfast) and RTÉ/TV3/TG4 from Kippure. More than likely you have a setup which has a large Group A UHF aerial for Divis and a VHF Band III aerial for RTÉ 1 & 2, you'll need a Group C/D aerial for TV3 & TG4, which to be fitted in correctly will need a diplexer to combine the Divis aerial.

Is the crackly sound on a NICAM TV? try switching off NICAM when on those channels to be crackle free (for the moment). Some TVs aren't as good as others for automatically switching to "mono" rather than having crackly NICAM on a borderline signal.

    thanks for the reply
