Anybody here work as a clerical officer with either a county or city council?

What i was wondering about is the payscale and would a person with a degree start on higher money than somebody straight out of school.

Or does everyone start at the same point?

I did a bit of time as a temporary clerical officer. In most cases you would start at a higher level. Starting scale is just under 22 I think (well, where I was anyway). It depends how relevant your qualification is though.

For example if you're coming in with a degree in architecture or town planning and going into the planning department.

If your starting with no degree & no experience its about 22k
no degree plus 1 year exp would be about 23k
with your degree plus some form of experience id expect about 25-26k starting off.
the salaries then increase to about 34k with experience.

these are estimates based on payscales released in june 06, I think theyve actually increased by 3% since then. all local authorities have the same payscales

Cork city council are advertising at the moment, the scale they have listed is

    €22,113- €23,152- €24,187-€25,225- €26,266- €27,303- €28,338- €29,371- €30,412- €31,446- €32,486- €34,446- Max €35,837 (following three years satisfactory service on the maximum).

No real mention in any of the notes about where an individual starts depending on education and experience

if you have no previous relevant work experience in the public service you start on the bottom.

what modmuffin says is complete rubbish

Yup ChuckProphet is right , a degree isn't taken into account for a clerical position in a local authority (might be beneficial to getting the job but won't affect pay) and work experience will only increase your salary if it was obtained within the public sector.

A woman I work with started at the same time as me in a local authority recently. She has no degree but 27 years experience in the private sector and I'm straight out of college with a degree. We're on the same salary as we are both Grade 3 library assistants.

Does anyone know if Dublin city council are hiring for clerical officers at the moment? I'm looking for office work at the moment. No info on their website.

Check out www.publicjobs.ie for clerical work in Local Authorities.

You can specify the region you wish to work in and the type of work, and they send you email alerts when new jobs become available.
