had a real bad day yesterday online. started with approx 5k. been playing 50/1 for the last few months and recently moved to 1/2.
After a series of bad luck/bad play yesterday I now only have about 2k. :(

What now? Move back levels/ take a break/ change style of play....

I didn't do a while lot wrong when I lost the first few buy in's... guys hitting 2/3 outters etc... Then i played badly enough and got unlucky some more.

Why do we do this to ourselves!

    Mac

Variance is a b1tch, though dropping > $3K at 1/2 is quite extreme.
You've still a solid BR for .50/1 though, so I'd suggest dropping back there. If you're struggling to profit there, drop back even further perhaps.

Either move up or move down levels. Depends what kinda person you are.

Taking a break might be good too.

yeah i agree with this it sounds like you may have tilted off some of your bankroll yesterday. take a break and come back in at the 50/1 level. dont think of where you were because youl just try to get back to 5k too quick making silly plays. set a target for each session you play and try to slowly build your roll again.

No it doesn't. Not at all.

OP, if I was you I'd move down to 100 or 50NL, whatever level you feel really comfortable with like you can beat it easy. Play some hands there and let your confidence and roll grow untill you feel ready to move back up. Keep in mind that you're only barely rolled for 100NL now.

You're such a nit, moving up to 10/20 and shipping it pf is clearly the best course of action.

not unless you do it blind in a multiway pot

No you have 40 BBs at 25-50 or 20 BBs at 50 100. Ship it.

Firstly, completely forget about the $3k you just lost, it's gone...:(

Then keep playing your same (presumably winning) style/game and go back to the level where you're most comfortable. And start again. But seriously try and just forget about that money you lost, and I wouldn't play again until you come to terms with that fact. It'll take a while to win it back, another thing you have to accept.

Ya forget about the money, last thursday to saturday I blew 8 buyins at 50-1 havent played a hand since and when I do it will be at 25-50. No point going busto underfunded at a higher level. Grind it out for a few weeks getting money and confidence back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,288 ✭✭✭✭ntlbell

Drop back down, take your time build it back up slowly, don't just jump up a level because you have the bank roll.

Put aside a % and play at the next level continue to build your roll at the level you're used to untill you get a good feel for the next level.

If I could put the word level into this post anymore i would...

you know what, this thread proves im a donk....
I play .5/1 or 1/2 depending on availability and I only keep a br of 500 at any one time.
Many I time, I've been done by 2-outers etc and I either a) reload (which I dont really count as I cash out so often. or B) drop down and grind out some stt's/micro limits.
With a BR of 500-600, what level should I be at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,886 ✭✭✭Marq

    Move up levels.

jesus.... 500-600 is my br for 1/2 for ONE NIGHT.
Um, I dunno what you could play, I suppose .25/.50 would be fine, or .50/1 but that would be pushing it.

Btw, no one should ever feel ashamed or bad about the levels they play. I beat .50/1 all the time but I know a load of people who play 10/20.
If you are a student 1/2 is HUGE stakes. If you are Alan Smurfit 50/100 is pocket change.

Use the 2k you have left to buy into a 2k tournament or maybe 2 x 1k tournaments if you're feeling all sissy.

I built my small bankroll up through the levels playing STT's all the way up to $20 when i had a bankroll of $1100, i then figured id about enough to hit the $50 level since i breezed through $10-$20 level but i hit the worst run of luck ive ran into yet and lost $500+ in one day (my first day playing $50 stt's) and the next day i was down another $100+ and i decided to drop back to $20 and build up again but this time with a bigger bankroll. It was some kick in the nuts though.. I dont know if the players were better or i just hit the worst run of my life but ill try again nonetheless. Im doing very well again at the $20 level again so it shouldnt be too long.

The worst thing was i lodged the $1100 into GJP knowing i could clear the signup bonus in 2-3 weeks playing $50 stt's but now im struggling to make that bonus playing $20 stt's. Does anyone know do you have to clear the bonus 100% to get it or do you get paid in installments like on other sites. Must contact shortstack.

Start playing plenty of $20 heads up games is the best way because they go quick, and double table stt's. I think you have to clear that bonus within 30 days of starting it.
I dont think you'll clear a $500 bonus otherwise at the $20 stakes your at but i could be wrong. I know i needed to play loads of $50 and $100 heads up games and more $50 stt's.
If you dont want to play heads up games then just put more hours in.

maybe we should do up a sticky (i know the dreaded sticky)
advising people what levels for what levels they should play depending on what their disposable income is.
Tbh, when I started posting here, I played 5-10 STT with a BR of $100.

Thing is I cash out a few hundred every 2 weeks or so, paying for my extravegent livestyle :D, seriously, paying off my fecking CC bills, a year on the piss does that ;)

Im starting to think I should not cash for a month or so and see where I am

u are wise beyond your drinking years! pay off your cc first, two hundred every 2 weeks is 2 grand by the end of April. nothing more vicious than cc interest, believe me, I know!

Heads up is a pretty good idea. Im pretty ok heads up but alot of it seems to be down to patients and good luck. Im sure even if i was to lose 10 more than i win over that period id still be getting my $500 bonus and id be +$300. i Presume you get the same action points on tribeca, headsup is a $1 fee compared to $2 fee for 9 tabling stt so maybe ill only get half the points.

Anyone play heads up much, if i like to outplay my opponent would you recommend turbo or regular??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭dvdfan

I checked it out STT's are 200 points, Heads up only 100 points. I have 54,400 points left to clear (Think it was 76,000 when i started). I joined on the 23 Nov so i estimate around 20 more days left to clear the bonus. That equates to 272 STT's i need to complete or 546 heads up. If i play an average of 15 per day for the next 20 days ill make it so ill start multitabling 2-3 tables. I can play 8-10 stt's on a normal day single tabling and on my days off id often play upto 15. So multitabling (although im not a big fan of multitabling) should let me clear the bonus. :):) I tried a few heads up and i wouldnt mind the odd one but it bored the hell out of me. Its ok when theres $90 up for grabs at the end of an stt and the blinds are reasonably large but when the blinds are 20/40 and youve a 2,000 stack it gets very tedious trying to steal tiny pots:mad: But i suppose it serves a purpose to run down bonuses. Anyway ill shut up now seens ive answered all the questions i asked myself and brought this thread off topic sorry OP:o

Yeah, 500 for 1/2 online is cutting it thin. I brought more than that with me to play in the fitz just for tonight...

    was in for 700 yesterday.

OP, take a break for a few days and then get back in at .50/1. I had the same thing happen to me this month and I switched games (limit to NL). Maybe a week or so playing micro limits PL Omaha might be good for you!

10-20 buyins. Mac, take a break for a week then what I would do is take 2 more buyins to 1/2 and if it doesn't work out then drop back to .50/1 with 16 buyins. The problem with this is you have to be very strict about it, worst case scenario you will only top up those 2 buyins with $100 max and keep 15 buyins for .50/1 should you need to go there.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I decided to single table it for a while and give the cash games a rest. Seems to be working for me. Joined 2 30 euro games and won won 2nd in the other. So a bit of confidence back. Played another 4 since and placed in 3 of them.

I'm going to gring it out this way for a while....

Good news is I'm back up to nearly 3k............

    Mac.

The loss is dominating your thinking. Take a week or two off. You won't forget it instantly (or ever) but you need time to cool down and come to terms with it.

If you go straight back you will win or lose. If you win you won't be happy until you win 3k. If you lose you will start to chase.

    Time out.

Or Marq can bankroll you. I heard he won recently. :)

No one has said this so I will - The Loss is domnating your thinking. Try to find advice that recommends a course of action based on this.
