IT Course completed but not certified - What should I put on CV?

    Hi,
I have completed a few classroom courses on Veritas NetBackup 5.1, EMC Clariion Host Integration and Management etc. They have been delivered from qualified instructors and I have course completion certifications.

I haven't sat any exams so I am not certified but I want to know how I should put this on my CV. I don't want the person reading my CV thinking I am certified but I want him to know that these were official classes and not just downloaded PDF's. This is the way I was thinking of phrasing it on my CV without being too long winded (like this question :) )

"Veritas NetBackup 5.1 course completion certification, EMC Symmetrix course completion certification, EMC Clariion Host Integration and Management course completion certification"

    Does this look ok?

Why not?. How often do employers ask for credentials from exams etc. It does look good on C.V., so why not put it down on it. I done a course in I.T. last year and have yet to do the exam, but it wouldn't stop me putting it on my C.V. :). Even if they ask for certs just say something like you have a test date for the exam.

So you lie you on your CV.

I'd put down "Exp. in blah" highlight who gave you the course and say what topic it was on.

You could do as Hal1 has done, at the end of teh day they probably won't care as long as they have the opportunity to test your knowledge on the topic.

Nope, don't state you're certified if you are not. Red-faces may ensue.

I'd split the education part of your CV down by Second Level, Third Level and finally 'Specialist Courses Undertaken'. Put your courses down under the last heading.

I wasn't planning on saying I was certified. I don't lie on my CV as I don't like covering things up and making excuses. I just meant that I had a certificate proving I had completed the courses rather than actually sitting the exam.

Judging by people's misinterpretation on the thread of what I meant, it means that it's not clear from the way I originally stated it. Potential employers will misunderstand it as well if you did.

I think I will go DublinWriter's suggestion of creating a seperate column for it to clear up any ambiguity.

I agree with DublinWriter - you should specify where/when you did the courses and maybe the institution that ran them. It shows you are motivated to improve your skills....

I have updated my CV. I have my computer skills in a table which don't copy and paste well so I just have them laid out as below.

Operating Systems - Windows Server 2000/2003 troubleshooting, Capacity Management, Server and Desktop builds

Certifications - MCSA, Microsoft Certified Professional (XP Professional, Windows Server 2003, Planning and Maintaining Windows 2003 Network Infrastructure, Core Network Infrastructure, Network Security), ITIL certified

Classroom Courses Completed - Veritas NetBackup 5.1, EMC Symmetrix, EMC Clariion Host Integration and Management, EMC Clariion Snapview, EMC Clariion SAN Copy and MirrorView – All courses were delivered by a Veritas or EMC certified instructor and I received certificates as proof of completing the course.

Protocols Services - TCP/IP, FCP, SCSI, DNS, WINS, iSCSI

Hardware - Servers (HP, Dell), RAID, SCSI, Brocade Fibre Switches, McData Fibre Switches, EMC Clariion, EMC Symmetrix, EMC Celerra (NAS)

Languages - Java, C, C++, SQL, Maple, Prolog, Assembly Language

Software Applications - Veritas Netbackup, Veritas Command Central, EMC Navisphere, EMC ControlCenter, Rational Rose, Matlab, MS Office, Remedy

    **********************

Have education details in a seperation section to computer skills. CV is 2 pages and not crammed. What do people think/?

Did I say lie on your C.V.?, No I did not, but what I meant was to include any revelant experience that you have on your C.V., even if you have not got the paper to say you have done said course.

So what I'm reading from that post is -

You've done a coure in IT last year, but havent done the exam. You put it down on your CV. If they look for the cert you say you have a test date for the exam.

So you've not actually gotten the cert, you also don't know if you will pass the exam.

So I believe you are putting a cert on your cv which you actually do not have. Is that not telling a lie on your cv?

I would never say I was qualified in something unless I had a bit of paper to prove it. All I am saying is that its no harm to include the experience on the C.V., and its up to the employer to take a chance or not.

The point of this thread was not should I fool a potential employer into thinking I was certified but if people put the courses they have completed on their CV even if they didn't sit the exam.

I have certificate for completing the course but I AM NOT CERTIFIED. I don't want the employer to think that I sat the exam and am certified but just that I have attended the course.

If you are going to sit the exam, and feel you will pass, just put it on your CV as a course you have done, and if they ask you anything about that topic, you can prove your knowledge.

    Keep it simple...

its also goign to be imporant to have a reason why you havent sat/passed the exam yet.
first thing an employer will ask is why have you done the courses but not got the exam?
