    Hi,

was looking around for a mouthguard that prevents gagging and helps breathing. I got a shockbuster made by the dentist but it doesnt really help, i cant keep it in for 30 seconds before i started reaching and gagging. Has anyone ever had this problem? I heard a shock doctor is good can anyone comment or recommend a way to over come this?

    thanks

I use one that's been shaped to my teeth and mouth and have not had any probs, and I spar frequently. One of our students complained about the same thing as in this post, and his solution was to breath in through his nose and blow out through his mouth. Not sure about this, but he seemed to think it helped him when sparring.

    Hi,

Thanks for the advice, but i have tried this. It fits perfectly but i feel it extends too far back or something, its very bulky. Within seconds of putting it in i start to gag! its so frustrating

Step 1: Take a scissors and cut 5mm of each end.

Step 2: Wear it all the time. I hate having to tell people to put in gumsheilds. Your training, not talking so as soon as you hit the mat put it in and leave it in. Shadow box with it, go for jogs with it. Basically get used to it in unstressful enviornments then try sparing with it.

    Peace

Alot of novices experience these problems with mouth guards. You should get used to it over time.

No need for a gum shield, teeth are over rated.

Get your dentist to trim the one that he made for you. It should fit perfectly without any gagging and you should be even able to talk with it in.
