broken off exhaust manifold bolt

    Anyone know of a safe way to remove a broken off exhaust manifold bolt? I have a new set of easy-outs but mabey someone knows of a better way to remove the bolt without any pr:mad: oblems

    oh yah i forgot to mention only the head of the bolt has snapped off leaving a little bit to grab will there be anyway of getting a grip on the bit left and turn?!!

    you might be able to get a stud bolt extractor to grip it. don't force it or else you'll have to drill, tap and use helicoils. use plenty of wd40 or equivalent. there are also freezer sprays which freezes the area and releases the parts. its a common problem with steel screws and alluminium.

    I would reccomend using PlusGas on all of the fixings and leave for a few hours. This is the best penetrating fluid yoiu can buy and will dissolve rust. It is used by aircraft mechanics, though commonly available, and it has never let me down !

    What exactly are you doing? Are you taking off a mnifolf and one bolt sheared ? If so then use the PlusGas on all the rest and take the manifold off leaving you with more room and hopefully a better purchase on the remaoinder of the bolt.

    If you have enough of the bolt protruding filing flats on the bolt and using a spanner will usually work a bit better than the traditional mangle with vice grip method. Plusgas first of course.
