Could it be my motherboard

    Hi,
Ive had the following problem with my pc for quite a while now. Tryin to troubleshoot the problem at the moment.
Basically my pc randomly freezes, reboots or won't load the operating system. Its usually fine after a reboot but a few minutes later it can crash again. Also the motherboard boot screen often prints gibbersish to the screen when its loading.
Note: Ive had this issue with installs of windows 2000, xp and suse linux so its not the OS.

Its not the memory because ive recently added 1 gig of memory stick and have removed the other memory and the problem persists. I doubt its the hard drive either.

Im not sure what component is causing the problem, i.e motherboard, chip, hard drive/graphics card(doubt it). I know I have to replace something but im not sure.

Any ideas what I could do? Are there any programs i could use to pinpoint the problem?, i.e cpu temperature.

Have you tested the RAM though? Give memtest a go, can't hurt. :)

What model of motherboard is it?
What model of CPU is it?
    I assume it's not overclocked.
    How old is the system?

freeze issues that I've had have been related to heat (fans are going OK?), poor power supply not supplying steady voltages to peripherals, un-updated motherboard and video bios, memory/motherboard mismatch, dust and dirt.

As well as looking at CPU and case temperature, have look at a graph looking at whether your 3.3V line is supplying 3.3V or a touch over, same for 1.5V or .8 for AGP graphics card, as reported by the motherboard.

You might be able to adjust your motherboard and CPU clocks to cope, depending on the make and supplier of your motherboard.

    Hi,
Thanks for your response's. Ill give both them applications a go when I go home.
Its quite an old system, AMD 2000 , about 3 years old but with 1256mb of ram its does the job, can't think of the motherboard name at the moment and its not overclocked.

Il test the ram but I doubt its the problem, problem occurs with 2 different/separate sticks of ram.

I havnt updated the BIOS since I got it, so it might be due an update. The fan's seem to run fine. Ive been having this problem for over 2 years now and always though it was a problem with Windows 98, Since ive upgraded the problem persists.
Thanks for your advice, seem like Ive a bit of investigating to do.
