ok way way back first few eps of season one when (i think) jack, locke and charlie are at the plane and they get chased by the monster jack falls behind and locke and charlie manage to get away and hide. no sign of the monster and all is quiet, then jack comes into sight and they ask him what it was and he says he didn't see it. i know my memory isn;t the best and i'm not near my comp to check out the ep but does he seem quite flustered by it?

perhaps he had an experience like eko did in season 2 with the flashing images etc and now with eko's brother appearing like he did is this the same as jack seen with his father?

*other point too was it the black smoke transform into human thing that tried to get hurley to jump of the cliff too?

I think anyone who has seen visions on the Ireland has been "read" by the black smoke, as it seems to be how the Island figures out your fears, motivations as well as weaknesses.

The Island then appears to people as friends or loved ones, like Ecko's brother.

Jack was haunted by the vision of his dead father early on in session 1, which lead him to the caves that the group moved up to before they found the hatch.

Yeah Jack must have seen the black smoke if he had visions of his father.

Are Jack, Locke and Eko the only people who have had these visions? Can't remember.

    Ireland?

Some believe he has which is why his pupils dilate in the first ever scene of Lost.

Remember when Locke got dragged away by the black smoke.. was it Jack that came to help him?

Well Hurley saw Dave but then he saw him before he was on the island. Kate saw the horse, which Sawyer also saw. Boone saw Shannon getting killed after Locke drugged him with his magic juice mixture. Shannon saw Walt speaking backwards at one point when she went after the dog. Sayiid followed her but I'm not sure if he saw Walt or not but I'm positive he heard the whispers.

Also when Locke got pulled away both Jack and Kate saved him and I think Hurley was around also but not sure.

Jack also got a glimpse of the black smoke at the end of Season 1 when it grabbed Locke.

Well they didn't all see the black smoke so that blows away my theory!

maybe im wrong but i think the black smoke takes the shape of whatever it wants whether it be something good or bad in someones life. how do we not know that it can take the shape of one of the survivors and lead the camp astray or split them. that would be presuming that it is bad. maybe it is good cause afterall eko was a bad person in the real world and also who really believes the others are the good guys. maybe the black smoke is good!!!!! with lost you dont know

Well we don't know what the black smoke can and can't do but it seems only to be able to create characters or images from the persons past and not the present day. It scanned Eko's mind where he saw Yemmi. It probably scanned Jack's mind just before he woke up at the start of Season 1 (wheter Jack saw it or not is something different)

if this thing can take the form of things from the past surely the present would not be that hard either. anyway i dont think the writers originally had jack and the black smoke in mind. i think people are just throwing that in.
