So for some reason my computer has become really, really slow all of sudden. I mean just like in the last few days. I loads of fine but when i try and open any programs it takes about 2mins or more and the program that i try to open frequently crashes(no specific program). I had a look in the taskmanager and there wasn't anything heavily using the CPU or loads of RAM. Everything looks normal. I scanned for spyware using spybot - search and Destroy and AD-aware. Found a bunch things and got ride of them but still no joy. My harddrive has 10GBs(139GBs used up) of space left on. So i can't think of what it is? anyone ye know?

Could be a lot of things. :/
A few random things I'd try off the top of my head would be:
Download a bootable CD ISO of memtest86 and just make sure your ram isn't shagged.
You could check your IDE controllers in device manager and make sure your harddrive isn't operating in PIO mode (which causes the system to crawl during HDD access).
Try booting from a live CD (there are many live linux CD's out there), and see if there are any performance/stability issues there.
Full virus/malware/etc scans... Rootkit revealer is another interesting tool to run... see if there's something hiding on your system... might give you some clues to follow up on (stick oddities into google etc).
Is your harddrive making any unusual sounds when loading programs?
Might be a good idea to backup your essentials if you suspect the drive is failing.

Anyway, like I said, to me it sounds like it could be any number of things, I'd keep plugging away at it though... try to narrow it down to either a hardware problem or something fishy in your windows install.

Is it a Dell? This happened my Dell a while ago and the source was in the BIOS. look under Processor in the BIOS setup and make sure it's not set to compattible, but the other setting whose name escapes me (efficient or normal or something like that)

Yeah it is dell. An 8300, P4 3.0ghz 1GB ram, 160GB HDD WinXP HE. I'm not particularly sure how to do those fixs ye suggest. I might just ring up dell and see if they can find a fix, thanks for the suggestions
