Hi, i live in tipperary. I know the best way to get started is to join club. But is http://www.archery.ie/ the complete list of Irish clubs? I don't drive and the nearest clubs seems to be very far away.
How would you recomend i get into archery?

Also i am right handed and left eye dominant. Learning to shoot left handed sounds like a pain in the ass . Is shooting left handed for people left eye dominant but right handed really the best way?
Closing my left eye sounds alot more comfortable then using a bow left handed, how big a disadvantage would it be over having both eyes open?

like you I'm cross dominant, (right hand, left eye) and i shoot right handed and always have. I've tried shooting left handed due to an injury years ago but prefer the right handed way.

There are two schools of thought on which way is best, to follow eye dominance or hand dominance.
The older view was to follow eye dominance but in the last few years Korean coaching methods have swung the favor towards hand dominance. In my opinion its up to the archer to decide.
There are advantages to shooting with you're dominant eye but if shooting with your left hand reduces your ability to release the string cleanly or draw the bow comfortably you should shoot right handed.

I haven't encountered any major problems, i'm competitive and don't see myself at a disadvantage, if its your preference to shoot right handed then my advice to shoot that way.
    (Others may disagree!)
    Keith

That is a full list of Target Archery Clubs in Ireland. There are also Field archery clubs, but they are not affiliated with IAAA.

Thanks guys. So potato head do you just close your left eye?

Target archery is what i wanted to take up, so looks like it might not be possible. :(

Just FYI: traditional field shooting uses binocular vision, so eye dominance is less of an issue.

I know you want to shoot target, but just so you know...

I'm also cross-dominant, and shoot according to hand-dominance.

And yes...I close my strong eye, looking only through my weak.

Does it work? Hard to say - I've no idea what type of an archer I'd be if I shot otherwise. I've tried, but it ain't comfortable either opening my eye or switching hands.

Oh...I should qualify by saying I shoot a neolithic-style longbow so I can't offer scores, meaningful comparisons to other archers, etc.
