Xbox Live start up problems

Just tried to get my new xbox 360 started on xbox live, but nope, no... it's not happening.

It tries to download an update from xbox live and then says it cannot connect.
I've done the network settings test and everything is confirmed until it gets down to Xbox Live and the whole download update thing starts again.
I've no idea what's wrong and I'm not finding the xbox.com/support very helpful.
I have an eircom wireless modem with a laptop running wireless on it, but the xbox is connected using an ethernet cable.
I read on one of the xbox.com forums that it migth be the MAC address as I have on occasion connected other computers to the modem using an ethernet cable... but this still hasn't worked.

Anybody have any ideas about what's going wrong? I have Gears and I'm dying to get some live action going on.

Did you set up the custom services in the router, and choose the xbox live games from drop down. If not there then update your router to 7.4.2r2. Is it the 3347NMG netopia router ?

ok if ur using eircom go to the router homepage 192.168.1.254.. go to custom services i think and click on xbox games and enable it. go to firewall and set it to low and save the changes.. if ur using a wep key enable it on the xbox360 network settings under security
