Really? That's interesting, I was there yesterday (The Quays, Newry) and didn't notice that offer, unless it was the one where you had to buy a lot (6+ or 12+ bottles of wine?) in bulk to get the discount?? They announced it so many times over the tannoy I ended up totally blocking it out. Didn't see any deal at all for spirits and believe me I was looking!!

Overall I was quite unimpressed with the "deals", last year was an awful lot better. I was going to post this on the Newry-specific thread, but I may as well put it here too.

For example I got a litre of Bailey's in Sainsbury's last year for £10; this year 750 mls was around £13 or so. Dunnes Stores in the other shopping centre, Buttercrane, was selling 5 kinds of spirits (Bacardi, Baileys, also a whiskey and some others I forget, sorry... 750 mls) at two bottles for £18.

Overall for bargains there weren't too many amazing deals - I heard a lady on the phone to her friend in Dublin who had decided to stay at home instead of making the trip. The general gist of their conversation was "you're just as well off there than here!" I peeked in her trolley and she had loads of Cillit Bang, and Selection Boxes so if you're into that, head up there and stock up!

Although there were deals on things like boxes of Roses and cans of Diet coke, overall the visit to the Quays didn't do too much for me. Waterstones there is about the same price as the one here, the clothes shops are exactly the same as you'd find in any Dublin shopping centre, and to be honest the clothes aren't as great. A-Wear in particular was a bit shabby I thought. I think that the chains here have really good deals in the shops this year, more so than any other year I've noticed. Could this be because of the Lidl/Aldi effect? Whatever it is, I hope the trend continues!

Incidentally the car park was about 90% full by noon; the centre doesn't open until 1 on Sundays. The shops are open for browsing beforehand, which is kind of handy if you want to really hit them with a vengence when their tills open! The queue to leave the car park was a nightmare, if I was going again I'd try to park as near to the Sainsbury's petrol station as I could, instead of parking down near the doors to the supermarket/shopping centre.

Just checked the receipt and you're correct.
You need to buy 6 bottles to get the 25% off but still good value.
Was there yesterday and didn't think there was too much cheaper than Dublin. Lot of ROI punters buying beer there, mince pies, selection boxes,
    boxes of biscuits.
Buttercrane centre is dreadful, nothing of interest there and as you say, most of the shops are already in Dublin nowadays.

Well to be fair, since you lot came up and took everything and clearing the shelves - prices have gone up. Just because you cant afford things in dublin doesnt give u the right to put the prices up in my town. Do yous know why the parking was full? Cause i tell you why it wasnt northern registrations that were leaving the cars here there and everywhere. And yeah the south is getting cheaper esp. dundalk - you ask why? because newry/ belfast people cant get into their own towns. No one wants your euro so feic off

I'd be very careful of what you wish for.

If people stopped going North for shopping, there'd be a lot of people in a lot of trouble up there.

Eh, it's a free market economy so people can spend their Euro where they want.

By the way, welcome to Boards ;)

That is so small minded. I bet if it was the other way around and down the south was cheaper, then you wouldn't be too long eating your words and hitting there for a bargain.

Sure haven't "you lot" been driving over the border to Monaghan and Dundalk for year to avail of cheap petrol/diesel.

    It cuts both ways.
