I always say this in these threads but I think Canada is far superior. Basically, Canada is like America except there's less crime and the drinking age is 19, which is important if you are <21.

I suppose I should mention that I haven't actually been on a J1 to the states but I have visited at other times.

I went to Boston in the states for the summer with a few friends and as much as i enjoyed it, the leagal age to drink been 21 did put a downer on it. If i could make a choice now, i would deffo choose canada, i had friends in college who went and said it was brillant and i have a few friends living there now who only have good things to say. I'm hoping to go over myself in April for 3weeks or so:)

This is a matter close to my heart!
I have spent a fabulous summer on J1 in the States and am just about to go on a year visa to Canada next month.

Do a search on this forum because a similar thread went around in the last while. On it I said the same thing:
Go to America while you can. You will never again in your life be offered a gateway into the States. You might think you'll be in college forever but as soon as you leave that's the end of it. Good luck winning the green card lottery for a visa!

I know. I tried. I wanted to go back to the States but I'm no longer in college so there are two chances of getting in.. slim and none.
So I am just as interested about Canada and so I applied and got my visa. Much easier to get and a really easy application process.

    That's my tuppence worth.

Went to San Diego for the summer gone, I too debated over U.S v's Canada but glad I chose the U.S as when you are on a budget and you cant enter the country willy-nilly you only really get the one shot at the U.S on the J1.

Canada is next on the list....

Yep. A lot of people manage to get a J1 twice. But the common denominator is that you have to be in college. Which for most people will last 4 years max. After that it's a nightmare trying to get into the States.

Grab the J1 with both hands while you can. And you might even get it twice like Mr.Rabies.

I was out of college a year and still applied. Got it no problems.
