We were told that the bar was to trianguleate the wimotes posisition in 3d space, lately there have been a few vids on youtube showing that its only a few lcd's and people making their own etc...

Can soneone explain what its all about?

People are making their own because the cable from the sensor bar to the console is relatively short. Someone with an LCD tv mounted on the wall or a projector setup would have a problem with this. Some people prefer to have the console a distance away from the television.

There is no issue with the sensor bar not working with LCD's/projectors though.

Some third party vendors are going to be manufacturing sensor bars with longer cables. As you can see, some people are also making homemade wireless units to overcome this problem.

The sensor bar is two lights that help the remote know where it is pointing in relation to the screen or something more sciencey.

Homemade sensor bars can be made out of candles too!
