With Daniel Craig firmly ensconced as the New James Bond for a new generation, I am curious to see how people perceive & rate him alongside previous Bonds?

    My personal rating .....................

    1/ Daniel Craig
    2/ Sean Connery
    3/ Roger Moore
    4/ Timothy Dalton
    5/ Pierce Brosnan
    6/ George Lazenby

    Dalton better than Brosnan???

It's very hard to rate Craig as the best having been in just one film

    I'd go with...

    1. Connery
    2. Brosnan
    3. Dalton
    4. Craig
    5. Lazenby
    6. Moore

It's pretty hard to choose actually, the only bad bond I'd say would be Moore. The rest, including Lazenby, were excellent.

    WTF? Dalton>Moore. No Chance.

With the forum charter clearly ensconsced as the rules to obey when reading a forum, I'm curious to see how people perceive and rate posts that clearly break these rules?

    My personal opinion...

    6. Roger Moore

Craig and Dalton got Bond right. That's how he was meant to be; cold, tough and extremely hard to kill! The only reason Connery is no. 2 is because he introduced the benchmark... even though it was an inaccurate benchmark!

I was thinking about this the other day and its actually really difficult to say(partly becuase craig and lazenby have only done one a piece.) but heres my list.

    1. Sean connery-come on how could he not be. The man is bond!

    2. Pierce brosnan- great bond but given a few crap films. If the material had have been better I reckon his suavness, wit and poised confidence could have making him a connery contender. But his lack of rugged manliness means hed always fall short.

3.Craig- I am a bit reluctant to put him here seen as hes only done one movie, but he got the character spot on. What he lacks in suaveness and natural wit he makes up with his hardness and willingness to get his hands dirty. Plus he actually looks like he could fvckin kill ya.

4.Dalton- probably the closest thing to flemings idea of bond. Wasnt as suave as brosnan, as cool as connery or as hard as craig, but he was believable and played the part really well

5.Lazenby- Okay so after connery he was a bit of a shock to the system but up until craig he was the realest bond. No bond, up until now, showed as much emotion as lazenby.

5.Moore- As someone said earlier he almost made a parody out of bond. He could deliver a killer one liner but even in his best years you couldnt really imagine him pulling the bond girls, by a view to a kill he would have need a crate of viagra and a set of jumper cables to do the deed. The real killer for him though has to be his inability to handle the most basic of action scenes.Wooden isnt the word.

    Lazenby

I can't really rank any of them. Each of them played Bond in different ways, and I just enjoyed them for what they were. I have to admit, at the moment, Daniel Craig is my favourite, but that could also be because it's the most recent one I've seen :D

    1. Dalton
    2. Connery
    3. Brosnan
    4. Craig
    5. Moore
    6. Lazenby

I don't like Roger Moore, for some reason, just something about him I intensely dislike. Lazenby, not a bad actor or anything, but just his character as Bond was totally wrong. Craig is good, but so what if he 'fits the original character', I still prefer the classics :)

Best single performance in my opinion would be either Dalton in 'License to Kill' or Brosnan in 'Goldeneye'.

It's hard to compare them since they have all been very different. Connery's portrayal really defined the film character and laid the groundwork for everything that followed so its easy to call him the best. But the other Bond's were just as good and original in their own way. Thankfully the producers never made the mistake of trying to find another Connery, instead they've seen every recasting as opportunity to reinvent the character. The film's however have retained the same basic formula since the beginning, occasionally drifting in or out of camp.

People tend to forget that the actor's didn't write/direct the films they were in, so some of the Bond's got the short end of the stick. Dalton could have been excellent IMO if only they had given him something to work with it. Brosnan was much luckier in this regard but still never reached his full potential.

Craig is brilliant but the fact that they made a real effort to do something different and better this time helps.

It can't be denied though that Roger Moore's eyebrows brought a whole new level of double-entendre-reaction brilliance to the Bond character. If I had eyebrows like that I would raise 'em to every comment that could be even dreamed of having a double meaning - screw it, I'd raise 'em to perfectly clear comments just to make others wonder if there was something dirty in there they missed :)

    Moore = legend

    1. Sean Connery - he set the tone, if he hadn't been as good as he was, would there even be a franchise?

    2. Timothy Dalton - extremely underrated, not as suave as Connery, but still able to smack a bad guy (or a woman) around as well. Living Daylights is my
    personal favourite Bond.

    3. Daniel Craig - a little too early to tell, but will be higher up if he maintains the level of performance seen in Casino Royale.

    4. Pierce Brosnan - widely regarded as a good Bond, mainly for saving the franchise, but he's not the best actor (see any other film he was in). Had the requisite charm, but suffered from the scripts getting progressively worse after Goldeneye, with Die Another Day firmly in the territory also occupied by the likes of The Man with the Golden Gun.

    5. George Lazenby - Connery was always going to be near impossible to follow and he perhaps suffered from an undeserved backlash. One of the best Bond stories and an excellent Bond girl in Diana Rigg couldn't save his career.

    6. Roger Moore - made the most and the worst Bond films. Live and Let Die was easily his best. Lazy scripts and tired cliches, compounded by crap acting make him the worst and most annoying bond.

Was just reading Dalton's bio and...
In 1986, after Roger Moore's retirement from the role of James Bond, the lean, 6'2" green-eyed Dalton was approached to replace him, but obligations to the film Brenda Starr and the stage productions of Antony & Cleopatra and The Taming of The Shrew kept him from accepting the role. Sam Neill was then screen-tested for the part of Bond, but was ultimately rejected by Albert Broccoli. Pierce Brosnan was then approached for the role, but was forced by NBC to turn it down (after initially accepting it) because of his commitment to the television revival of Remington Steele. In the ensuing time, Dalton had completed the filming of Brenda Starr and was now able to accept the role of James Bond.

Previously, Dalton had been offered the role of James Bond twice. In 1968, he was asked to replace Sean Connery, who declared that he would not do another James Bond movie - which became On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) - after You Only Live Twice (1967). Dalton turned the offer down, feeling he was too young for the role and because of what he felt was an imposing legacy left behind by Connery; the role finally went to George Lazenby. During the late 1970s, he was approached again, but he did not favour the direction the movies were taking. As he explained, his idea of Bond was different.[1] Work commitments made him again refuse the role in 1986, but when asked a fourth time, he agreed to appear in three James Bond films.

Wow! He was only 22 when he was first offered the job, and then turned it down 2 further times after that!

i would never have associated suave with Connery, i think you mean he has a charming rogue quality more than suave, connerys bond was never about cool sophistication, dalton was suave brosnan was suave (and crap)

Not including Casino Royale since it's too recent to judge, OHMSS (regardless of Lazenby) is the best film overall IMO, closely followed by Goldeneye. I think Dalton made a great Bond but I didn't care for his two films. The Connery era was certainly the best in the franchise but not all of those films have aged very well IMO.

i think whoever said that each actor brought a different approach to the role was right on the money
for me connery is still the man , he is so effortlessly cool

lazenby couldnt act his way out of a paper bag but on her majestys secret service in my opinion was probably the best ever bond film , well untill i saw casino royale that is

roger moore , i think he gets a pounding , i actually still enjoy some of his bond movies , the spy who loved me , octopussy were pretty good

dalton , a good actor but he was completly humourless as bond and even daniel craig brought a slice of comedy to the role , dalton , none
plus i think the living daylights is one of the worst bonds in the series
a dull script , crap villians and possible the worst bond girl in the entire series
licence to kill was a good movie but somehow it doesnt feel like a bond movie

our own pierce brosnan , as someone said , hes not a very good actor , he deffinatly has the bond look about him but having seen his bond movies recently , goldeneye is the only decent one and even that would barely scrape into the top 10 greatest ever bond movies

finally to daniel craig , i think he is on his way to overtaking connery as the greatest ever bond
the guy has it all, hes a good actor , hes extremly physical , he kicks ass in the fight scened , lazenby was excellent in the fight scenes too but as mentioned , craig can act
casino royale is an incredibly stylish film , it blows brosnans bonds out of the water , with the likes of the bourne identity , bond hd fierce competition but with daniel craig , they once again set the standard in action and escapism

    My 2 cents worth:

    1. Sean Connery
    2. Daniel Craig
    3. Pierce Brosnan
    4. Roger Moore
    5. Timothy Dalton
    6. George Lazenby

People, there can be no doubts as to who the best ever Bond was.

    Bob "Can I have a 'P', please?" Holness. :D

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/007
In addition and generally considered "unofficial", Barry Nelson portrayed Bond in an Americanised television episode adaptation of Casino Royale in 1954. Bob Holness portrayed James Bond in a South African radio adaptation of Moonraker in 1956. Roger Moore acted the role in an episode of a TV comedy show called Mainly Millicent (starring Millicent Martin and guest stars) in summer 1964.

But if you spoilsports are gonna restrict it to the movies..... :D I don't think there is much competition for Connery. I also think people in general are unfairly harsh in their criticisms of Dalton.

Of course all the actors were restricted by the scripts and the type of Bond that the directors were looking for them to portray.

I only saw the new Bond a week ago but still if i try to imagine Bond i see Connery.

I think Craig is a good Bond, but then again he had to be in Casino royal, as the whole film revolved around how the "New Bond" is introduced. Like with Batman begins this is supposed to be bond re-thought and re-introduced from the start, before he's a 00. It showcased his "license to Kill", he was still suave but not corny anymore. there is no Q or R i.e no Gadgets really as the emphasis is kept on Bond. Infact the main thing developed apart from Bond is the Bond-girl which really just further develops the Bond character in this one, as its his first Bond girl and how will this Bond deal with the ladies and their enevitable removal from Bonds future.

Connery, but Brosnan is quite close.

Not really a huge Bond fan... but i could really take to Craig as Bond. A few films down the line, and he may be recognised as one of the best bonds.
