Probably been done b4, but anyway...
I know there is an unholy amount of how who why where etc. questions about this infernal show, but one thing i don't understand as follows:
At the start of season 2, Kate shoots the computer, and Desmond freaks in a big way. However, he doesn't run and get the key from "Our Mutual Friend", and when he tries and fails to fix the computer, he doesn't wait around to see if Sayid can fix it, he runs away to his yacht and sails away. Now, notwithstanding his excuse to Hurley in Season 3 that he didn't know what would happen if he turned the key, why, if he was in the situation where he felt that the computer was irreperable, would he run instead? Just forgot about it? Unlikely...
    Any thoughts and/or slagging welcome!

Wasn't he lock(e)d inside the computer room?

    Fair point Ginger

This got discussed in detail on the thread of the last episode of season2, it was called 'LiveTogetherDieAlone' and its probably still somewhere on the database if you want to try hunt it down.

Personally I think it was a writing mistake, and the writers probably considered it 'fixed' with that little conversation he had with Hurley.

Is how people still watch it. I was an avid fan but when i heard it had been signed up for another 5 series or so I said no way jose. The intrigue was how it was all going to pan out. Then I realised I would never know.
    Good luck to yez.

I reckon Desmond was planning on leaving soon anyway. So when the computer got shot he just decided to leave early. He knew the boat was all ready to go and he didn't know he'd end up back on the damned island. He didn't care what happened to the island or the button, he had an escape route (or so he thought). I also thought it was clear from the last episode of season two that he presumed turning the failsafe key would kill him.

Fair enough i suppose, but i have a new, more pertinent question: How come none of the losties have found all the booze he was drinking? Did he just take it all? I suppose we know now why he was in such a rush packing, just the bare essentials;)
