    Just on the phone their.

A recruitment company just rang me to see that they were head hunting people for a senior engineering position for a company based in Dublin.

They said they had researchers checking out their competitors who identified my company as offering a similar role and I personally the qualities they need. N

ow the role was just beneath associate director (in one year it be mine I was told!) so I don’t think it there would be much change of getting the job but it is the first time I’ve been headhunted!

Have people had this happen to them?

I didn’t really like the fact the were ringing me at work and I’m still a bit dubious as to how the really got my name cause I cant find any info on them online. It’s a company called nexis/nexus and there is not Irish operation. Oz and London based sites so that’s why I’m a bit wary but we’ll see

Are you registered on linkedin.com or a similar site? This is where many agencies get your details.

Does your current company have internal phonebooks which may have made it into the hands of the recruitment agencies? Another potential goldmine for agencies.

Cold calling happens a lot where I work.. i.e. I would get a call saying "Hi, I am from company X, we are looking to do business with you. Can you tell me who the expert is in Y or give me there number"? Most people have the cop on to realise who is calling... but some don't and give out details.

I'm not registered with any sites like that.

Our company is fairly small so all we have is an A4 sheet of paper with the phone numbers on it.

THe last one might be a possibility. The person who does the phones here could easily have done something like that without realising. But still that wouldnt explain how she got my name as I wouldnt be the most senior here for the job spec she was giving out.

sometimes you might get refered on my someone who knows you/knows of you, maybe someone you worked with before... or might know you from the sector.

Its very simple, a recruiter might call someone on their database, say for sake of example, you registered in the past for System Admin jobs. so they call him up, and the candidate might not be looking, and they say ok, do you know anyone else who might be worth talking to about this job. and they might say, well there Joe Flynn I used to work with, I think he is with XZY Technology... so they call ya up!

As long as the recruiter identified themselves, and you can check out their a real company, web site etc, then I would not worry about it too much,....

Also sometimes by doing proper advanced web searches etc, you can get basic info on names of people and job titles in companies.

Though they should have the cop on to ask are you ok to talk at work, or would another time be more suitable to talk... and as long as they do not blast the head off you with 2nd hand car salesman tricks etc etc....
