I'm not a legal expert, but it's never stopped me from giving advice

If it looks like a machete and they see it, then the odds are customs will keep it the "idontlikedelookadat" rule applies.

Maybe get yer man to label it as an ornamental da (they look like sabres dont they?) and see what happens. Dont label it "machete" lol

I've had various swords posted direct to Ireland on a couple of occasions. These were full weight chinese broad swords and straight swords dull blades that can take an edge if required. I never had any problem with customs, apart from having to pay import duty on one occasion based on the declared value of the package.

The swords were bought from 888KnivesRUS in the states, who have a good selection and good prices, but are pretty slow to deal with.

Have them labelled up as antiques, native artifacts or tools/cutlery.
Should be no bother, machetes are indeed specifically banned, but these are not machetes! As far as I know they will contact you if there is a problem, I'm not certain as nothing of mine has ever been stopped or confiscated by Customs. I have had packages opened and inspected, then they get delivered.
I've bought traditional Golok from http://www.valiantco.com/ with no hassles, as well as quite a lot of knives, sticks, staffs, rifle sights and assorted MA gear. Once it's not an automatic knife, machete or "death star" you are not running afoul of the law. I'm not sure where assisted openers would fall, but I imagine they would not be allowed.
Just don't be wandering around outside with them and the Gardai won't be bothered either. A proper case or maybe a pool cue case for transport to and from training maybe?

    howya paddy,
i imported swords from scotland a few years back. they were 16th century reproductions, blunt edges but en45 steel (its a hardened steel).
they ( 4 of them) were posted to me in an unmarked cardboard box and arrived with no trouble whatsoever.
You've got to figure a large package from thailand will attract more attention than one from scotland but as they will be blunt they are not illegal.
Blunt wall hanger swordas are sold all over dublin.
The only thing customs would be pissed about is you importing goods without paying import duty, which is usually a percentage of their worth so ask your friend to include an invoice for say 50 euro, reducing duty to a small sum.
would wait til i see you in the gym for this info but christ knows when that will be
