Looking for a recommendation on a discipline

    Just read this thread...

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055010530

I am in a similar position, and this answers a lot of questions for me in terms of training set ups in the Dublin area

I didnt want to hijack that thread so here is my question...

I have been watching a bit of MMA recently (UFC mainly) and I would be interested in getting involved in the sport.

What really interested me was the strategies and techniques used on grappling situations. For example BJ Fenn v Mat Hughes in UFC 63 was really interesting. BJ although a lot smaller seemed to be able to control the much larger fighter through superior technique (but lost in the end!). I think his discipline is Jui Juitsu?

So on that note could anyone recommend a discipline that would kind of be grappling / technique heavy and with training in the Dublin / South Dublin area.

Also is there a one stop shop for grappling / stiking? I was thinking 1 class kickboxing / 1 class grappling per week

What kind of training do you guys do up in Na Fianna?

    Hi there,

Bj penn is a BJJ (also known as Brazilian Jiujitsu, jiujitsu) world champion. Good places to learn this sport in dublin are SBG Ireland( www.sbgireland.com), based in Rathcoole and SBG Northside, based in Baldoyle (www.sbgnorthside.com).

other grappling clubs include SBG Tallaght (firhouse top team :)), Three Castles in tallaght, next generatoin loughlinstown.

BJ penn is also a MMA world champion. MMA or mixed martial arts combines, as you know both grappling and striking. The two bjj clubs I mentioned above are also MMA clubs.

Other MMA clubs in Dublin include Fianna in balally/dundrum area(www.fiannagym.com), next generation in loughlinstown, ko martial arts in glasnevin, kokoro in east wall (www.mmaireland.com).

    And others!

I think currently anyone training in MMA in dublin is training in a MMA club that cover all three ranges. SBG Ireland and SBG Northside both have a specifc Thai boxing coach. Some competitors train in wresling and submissions in one place and thai boxing in another place, usually bridgestone muay thai off Dorset street.

Where exactly are you based in dublin? What kid of commuter route to you take. I think it's best to start off in the clubs nearest/more easily accesiable to you and train as often as possible.

Hi Flat. I thought Id say something about the club I train in, which is the MMA club down in East Wall. What we do is a mix of full contact Karate and Judo. We train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. There will also be a Monday starting class fairly soon, and the times will probably change too to an 8pm start. For more information check out our websites www.mmaireland.com and www.kyokushinbudokai.org The guy who first put the Karate and Judo together to develop our style also started this stuff. Its as close to what we do as you will find on the net. We dont wear the helmets though or do headbutts, in competition.

I was also hoping to find a BJJ class around Dublin/South Dublin.

I made this map from what I read on the boards

google map of dublin bjj classes

I'm not sure it's 100% accurate, but I hope it's helpful for you.

Lads it's a google map of Dublin area and it has little markers indicating the 10 or so BJJ and BJJ friendly MMA clubs. You can zoom in to varying degrees, all the way up to the name of the road (ballygall road east etc.) HAve you tried it in 2 different browers and do you have the google map software installed on your computer? you may need different flash software also, I'm not sure. khannie do you know?

    Hi Flat,

That map is animal! I only saw your question today, sorry for not answering it sooner.

Anyway the gist in Fianna is this...

Monday 7 - 9.30 Clinch (wrestling) and Ground (bjj)

Wednesday 8 - 10 Clinch (wrestling) and Stand-up (striking) (only every second wednesday for the time being)

    Saturday 11 - 12.30 Ground (bjj) and Stand-up (striking)

    Peace

    yea thanks for that

I was thinking of sticking my head in on a monday night, the fianna website said that was beginner night, and try the other discipline with Dave in East Wall and see which one was for me

I am coming from Donnybrook on the bicycle so the two places are probably equal distance

maybe you can help me with this though, how much training before contact or full sparring, like if I go up on Monday night can I expect some olympic wrestler to be punching me in the face ;P

    ta

Just saw this now. It just uses Javascript, so you'll need to have that enabled, but you wont need anything else installed. In firefox: edit->preferences->content->enable javascript should be ticked.

I don't have internet explorer on this computer but if you have the highest security settings enabled then I think it will prevent javascript from running. I /think/ that's under tools->options->security, but it's been a while.

For what it's worth, it works perfectly for me.

Training is tough, but we are only a year old so most people will be in the same boat. Theres alot to learn, so whichever clubs you decide to visit you should do a good few classes to get a feel for what they do. Before you decide to come down you should give Shane a call and have a chat. His number is on the bottom of the mmaireland site.

    Good Luck.
