Anyone know if this will be on general releas or not?

IFCO.ie says it was due out on the 24th of November, but it ain't in any cinema in Cork. The only thing I could find was that it's on in the Kino cineman in cork late next month.

The reason I'm asking is I was listening to virgin radio last week and there was a fairly major advertising campaign for it being released..

    Really looking forward to it...

Well, it was reviewed in the Independent Day & Night magazine on Friday (4 / 5 stars).

It's not playing in the cinema in Sligo anyways so it's lucky i saw it a couple of weeks back!

    Fantastic film by the way..!

Saw it in the IFI in Dublin last night. It is also in Cineworld on Parnell Street and Vue in Liffey Valley so looks like it is on general release. Anyway, fantastic movie 9/10.It's like a mix of The wind that Shakes the Barley and the Wizard of Oz. It's worth traveling to if it's not released in your local cinema.

The UGC has about 5 showings a day.

Great film, worthy of all the praise its been getting... also, not a kids film.

its on in the UCIs as well. bet the reason you dont have it in your local is some muppet thought it was kiddie fare and bought "tenacious D " instead :D

Mark Kermode reckons it's up there with Citizen Kane. I reckon it's pretty good, well worth a watch and better than most of the films you'll see this year. Along with Children of Men, The Fountain and The Prestige, it's been a good year for cinema.

Just back from it in Cineworld : probably the most disturbing film Ive seen this year (well, released this year anyway). Probably the most well made and imaginative film in a long long time as well. But all the warnings of darkness should be heeded. This is a very dark film indeed. There was a 12 year old or so kid with his parents beside me and I felt quite sorry for him. 9/10 though : track it down.
Not sure where else it is playing though. Only Cineworld and IFI in Dublin I think.

No, it's Spanish with English subs.

Hence why all TV advertising had zero dialogue! :D

I was wondering about that... The trailer I saw in Florida last week had none either, and half of their population's first language is Spanish.

Bah.. I have been waiting for this movie and don't know when it is going to come out here in NZ.
Children of Men has just been released, Little Miss Sunshine is still on general release, Bond in a week or two. No sign of the Prestige yet (doesn't matter CSG ruined it)

Gonna take ages before Pan's Labyrinth comes out.

    Grrrrrrr.

    :(

It's actually rated 16 so children shouldn't be allowed in at all.

Yeah thought that myself - he* was with his 'rents though which means they might have turned a blind eye to it. But for films like this they should strictly enforce the rules.
*disclaimer : kid may have not have been twelve. all conjecture based on a rough visual estimate in a dark cinema.

Hmm that's not quite it. This kid was around 10-12 years old, spiky hair (7 spikes and two half spikes), an orange t-shirt, blue shorts / shoes, white socks. He had a skateboard and kept on yelling something about not having a cow ( ) at random intervals. Here is an artist's impression

You must be joking,it has probably been one of the worst years in a long time film wise.
Most of the stuff being made is utter garbage.
    Teen slashers,cgi cartoons,gross out comedies,reality tv stuff,remakes,its shocking.
Hardly any mystery/thriller/sci fi stuff released this year .

Exactly. Every year you'll get your teen slashers and all that, but over the last few months we've been treated to some excellent films as well.

    This basically an anti-fascist film?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭lodgepole

    This basically an anti-fascist film?
No. It's basically a fairytale, which has it's setting in war torn Spain. It's not an historical film and it doesn't make any real judgement on the era in which it's set.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 864 ✭✭✭Aedh Baclamh

    You didn't think that was anti-fascist? :D

havent got round to it yet though intend to but on a side note am i the only one pissed off at the convenient lack of attention drawn to the fact its subtitled?? i didnt even know about that till i read a post in this thread. ok i know the filmmakers want as many people as possible to see the film but its a pretty ****ing big thing not to mention. they did the same thing with nightwatch earlier in the year. i for one think its a disgrace, if its not in english bloody tell us. i 'll still go cause it looks like one of the most original films of the year but i dont like feeling like im being taken for a ride and effectively conned into expecting one thing while getting another through deliberate misrepresentation by the advertising

I was actually more afraid the film was going to be dubbed when I went into the film today.

I can understand your point, but I dont like it when cinemas stick big stickers across the film poster in bold WARNING: THIS FILM IS SUBTITLED I feel the warning part is a bit unfair to the film.

    On the film itself.

Technically very impressive, esp the sound which was fantastic (the sounds Faun made were brilliant...and what a voice!

Storywise, i'm sort of angry, not at the film, but at Del Toro, how is it that when he does films like this and the Devils Backbone, he can weave such wonderful pacing and touching scenes and while his films in english, while still entertaining can barely touch half the emotions these films create (more blunt i think.) though his humour in his english films is fantastic, these are more serious affairs.

Can picture the Father Ted moment:

"Is it dubbed or is it subtitled?!" :D

Agree with this totally. Looked impressive in most parts too, the Pale Man was excellently done.

But did anyone else think the whole thing was a bit too simple?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

multiple plot lines running at the same time, plus a moral dileama on all sides, sprinked with fantasy and clever action set pieces, all nicely tied up at the end yet with a hint of air to allow speculation by the viewer.

...no I dont think it was too simple, it was just right for a movie that is entertaining where the brain focuses on the film's development and not on other things.

I didnt find the subtitles distracting at all, in fact the foreign language element added to the mystique of the story.

For me, Pan's Labyrinth is this best film of the year.
Its got such a haunting atmosphere about it, the acting superb (Ofelia is the Mexican Dakota Fanning), Javier Navarrete's score even puts Danny Elfman and Bob & Barn to shame, the sets are stunning, the story is magical and compelling, and Doug Jones does a spectacular job playing Pan and the terrifying Pale Man (one of the coolest, most horrifying demons in film). That, coupled with the fact Mike Mignola made an awesome poster to go with it. :D
Its a shame many will probably never see this gem, since there's those big titles like Casino Royale, Pick of Destiny, Borat and Jackass 2 out. Most people I know wouldn't bother going to some "fairytale in Spanish", and the idea of subtitles turns a lot off too.
But I bet the DVD will be a must buy, as Del Toro loves his fans, and he packs so much in the extras (check Hellboy - Director's Cut for proof!).
(Also, on another note, I'm only 14 going on 15, and still managed to get in. My mind is very dark and twisted anyways, I loved the glorious violence and mature themes)

Don't lump the wonderful Ivana Baquero with that so-called "actress"!

With regards to the violence.. i did think the
face smashing incident with the bottle
was a "bit much" - almost in it for shock value. But didn't exactly take much away from a wonderful film.

She's actually Spanish, where the film was shot. The majority of the cast was Spanish, in keeping with where the film is set. A lot of the crew seem to have been Spanish too.

She's a little freak alright, but she's a tremendous actress.
