I don't want to pay for a wireless adapter for Xbox360. Would like to use laptop on win2000, and internet connection share to allow xbox360 to go live on my wireless network. Anyone done this. Let me explain : xbox360 cat5 cable to ethernet port on laptop, then broadcast to my wireless router from my laptop via wireless (internet connection share). Looked up microsoft bullentins and only mentions not to ICS on DHCP server as puts static IP in place and cannot be removed. My router is eircom and is DHCP enabled.

Never done it but i would say it would be fairly straight forward with Windows XP but not win 2k

you could purchase a wireless bridge which you could get for 30/40e

I am not very familiar with wireless bridges. For internet connection sharing in win2000, I can add the wired ethernet port to the wireless connection in ICS via its network properties. Then there is the settings: Name of service ok (anyname I assume) and setting the known UDP, TCP ports for Xbox360 live seems ok. But, then there is the services to allow and I do not know what service to add. List is FTP, IMAP3, IMAP4, SMTP, POP3 and telnet server. Is the Xbox site an FTP server location. All others are mail servers except telnet and unlikely to be that.

Had a look at this in an XP desktop also but there is no ICS connection for my wireless connection although one exists for the wired.

Am I making this all to complicated. I do not want to spend any more money on hardware if possible. Will not hand over another 80 for a wireless adapter when you can get a PC version for less than 30.

    Got any ideas ?

There was a few threads like this a while ago but for the life of me I cant find in search.

You basicly need a cross over cable and share your connection. There is a bit more than that but I just cant remember.

ICS is very basic and it's not just a case of adding "ports" the reason i say it would be simpler in XP is it supports a software bridge which would route the packets from the wired network to the wireless.

in xp you would probably have to change the wireless nic to "ad-hoc" make a peer to peer connection to the router and bridge both the wired and wireless nics.

I would just purchase a wireless bridge.

The services you see in the ICS properties are services on the inside of your local network that can be accessed from people outside

e.g. you're hosting a web server on 192.168.0.10 ics will forward traffic from the outside destined for port 80 to the internal host on the inside

    (port forwarding)

this won't help you what you're trying to do

Had a quick look at a netgear WGE101 wireless bridge on web and it appears to allow a broadcast to the router and this eliminates the need for a PC connection altogether. Is this typical of wireless bridges. If so, that will be much easier. Could disable WEP and enable MAC address filtering on router instead. Do you know of a good make (not belkin or linksys) for cheap that will do the job. Netgear is great stuff but always bloody expensive.

By the way does anyone know of any compatible USB wireless adapters if that is cheaper route to go. Lots of forums say there are compatible ones but none give a name/make.

Had a good look on the net for wireless bridges and they are all expensive. The official xbox360 one looks about the correct price. Which brings me back to the next question. If ICS on Win2000 is a pain in the ass, that leaves a bridge or a compatible adapter via USB. What is the cheapest and best to get and where did you get it, at what price. Is there anyone running LAN parties on PC or xbox using wireless bridge (PC) or USB wireless dongle (xbox). What are you using ?

The 360 doesnt support usb wireless conections other than the offical one.

Harvey Norman sell them for €80.
