Im just wondering if anyone knows if i buy one here and take it back will it work on my irish xbox 360?

Its sold here for about half price of what it is in ireland.

It will work with all HD-DVDs as they are region free but it wont play ordinary dvds from here as they are region locked

Which isn't really a big deal as you can just play those DVDs from the actual console itself :)

In fact, it'd be a better idea (for me anyway) to get a US HD drive. I have a load of R1 DVDs. This might be something for me to look into.

The HD DVD drive is also out here as well, I picked mine up in Xtra vision Game Store in The Square Tallaght yesterday, I went into the shop and the had it in the case behind the counter, it cost €225.

Hooked it up last night to "test" it with King Kong, impressed so far unfortunately I has to box it back up as its a birthday present to me next moth from my wife.

If you are getting one from the US, see if you need a Step Down Transformer too. (look to see if its 110V only)

Did you get king kong free with that?!

Well i bought it cost me 216 dollars (164 euros) and free king kong included :)

I didnt even think about the 110V power but i just opened the box and it does accept 100-240V, which is normal for most electronics that use AC-DC adapters now anyway.

BTW. Why does europe get ripped off on electronics? almost everything cheaper in usa.

Now if only i could fit a HDTV in my suitcase.... ;)

Does anyone know if shops are selling hd-dvds yet? And what price are they?

(Btw i know play.com is selling them)

Yes it included King Kong and the backlit remote. I was very surprised that they had it, as I was intending on probably buying it on the internet. In particular a few weeks ago I contacted xtra vision and they had said that they would not be stocking it.

It just happened that when I walked in they had it in the display cabinet behind the counter I told my wife as its a birthday present to me, we went in and asked and they handed us one from under the counter.

When I got home a hooked it up and at first I was not that impressed with it, I have my 360 hooked up to our Philips HD set by VGA, I could see the resolution increase but not the colour depth I was expecting, then i remember a thread that I was on AV Forums where it talked about some TV's that process VGA signals differently than Component, and sure enough since using the VGA lead I always thought that the VGA color always looked a little flat and never had a good black level.

So I changed over the the connection back to component and the difference in colour depth is huge and that gave King Kong a much better look, and Gears of War I can sacrifice a little in sharpness for increased colour depth and contrast. Now I'm very impressed with it, going to order some films online from UK and us as HDDVD is region free for Xmas.

Yeah I bought a US xbox360 hddvd drive. Got it for similar money but had to pay postage. The only problem if you could even call it that is that u will need to substitute the mains cable that plugs into the transformer-or replug the end to suit an Irish socket.

The quality from the player and hd discs is fantastic. King Kong lookes brilliant. Excellent value for money considering the price of stand alone hd dvd players.

One other thing to remember is that, as with the games, the only way to get proper surround sound (not just pro logic) is to hook the console up to your surround sound system via an optical output from the 360 to sound system. Otherwise its just pro logic which is less than ideal.

It seems that i will now have to upgrade my surround sound system to get Dolby 5.1!!

Has anyone else encountered the same problem? and if so, how can it be overcome without replacing the surround sound system??
