Ok, my machine keeps freezing or powering down the monitor. Pretty sure it was the gfx which was about 2 + years old. So replaced that yesterday and the problem persist, though not as bad as before so, the gfx card had something to do with the problem.

Now I have no idea where to go from here. I have swapped monitors, sweeped for viruses. Covered most of the bases I can think off. Uninstalled display drivers and went back in time to older ones, etc. Any ideas?

    Dodgy power supply?

Might sound obvious, but are there any power saving settings set to switch off your monitor after 1 min or something simple like that?

Just swapped it with a spare but I'd doubt it. The monitor never loses power.

It may be possible that the motherboard has just packed it in. I know a guy who experienced the same thing u have with your machine, about 3 weeks ago, he brought it in to be repaired but they couldnt really do much to solve the prob. They were still able to retrieve the hard drive and stuff tho but it sounds like a similar case to me

I hope it isn't. Its a dell if what I've read is to be believe I'll have a bitch of a time replacin the motherboard.

Try running memtest. Might not be related to the powering down but worth a try anyway.

I had a similar problem, and others that were caused by RAM. My latest one was almost identical to yours and I too initially blamed the graphics card.

Check to make sure none of your RAM is faulty. RAM problems have a shocking way of disguising themselves as something else.
