    Hey there,
I am thinking of changing careers and am interested in learning to be an outdoor instructor. Can anyone give me some advise regarding the best way to get into this and any information regarding pay and working conditions would be greatly appreciated. I am currently based in the east and all the work seems to be in the west. Would this be right?

Yep. My cousin ditched his job in an ISP in London a few years back and went to work in Scotland as a windsurfing instructor. He could already windsurf and he paid £3000 to do a three week instructor crash course with them in Egypt in February, and then worked for the summer in Scotland as a junior instuctor - for crap all money. I believe they refunded the tuition fees for the instruction as well after the summer of work. Off season he took what work he could get for a while, but now I believe he's doing a similar lark at becoming a ski instructor for the winter - working kitchens a few days a week to pay his way.

It's not easy but if you love the thrill of the outdoors, its very doable, and you can get there by whatever way you want!

And to answer your question: for the first few years the pay will be ****, and the pay will never ever be good unless you set up your own place. Do it for the love...
