Still playing VGAP?

I checked in a Rome Total Realism forum, to see if anybody still plays VGA Planets and nobody ever heard of it before, so I'm asking the same thing here.

I'm asking because I consider it to be one of the top 10 strategy games of all time and there are a number of sites hosting for it, so there are more players than just myself that agree. What I find sad though is that so many people who enjoy strategy games are missing out on this one and yes I like RTR or RTW along with a great number of other games, but still enjoy playing my VGA Planets games.

Enough of me going on about it.. So anybody at least "hear" of it before????

    :(

Played it alot years ago, good game but the version I was playing had some major balance issues, can't remember the race, was it lizards, could cloak and turn up at a planet and while still cloaked land colonists on it? Must be years and years ago.

    Ahh VGAP.

THe lizards I think had the added advantage of each man counted for 5 men so you turn up undetected and dumped a load down and took over then onwards to the next,

    Its at version 4 now.

Well version 3 is still around, but I have never played version 4 as it's involved, but I've not heard anything bad about it. As for version 3, it has been through a lot of changes and is quite good now or say well rounded with the different strategies played for each of the 11 races used. But anyway, I just wanted to post a link I use for playing the game since it has all of the information should anybody be interested in looking at it again or perhaps somebody new to the game: http://www.rcworld.de/index.php

In all, I play this game because you can so so in your spare time without it taking up a huge amount of my free time (or hmm work), but when I do have a few hours to kill, I'll sit down to RTR or hopefully soon "Spore". I should point out that I've got a son who is also into strategy gaming and finds vga planets also quite fun, but it in no way will compare to any of the fast paced games and it is more suited to those that enjoy planning their moves out, but I think it's far easier to have a look at the site for yourselves.

In the end, I suppose I am interested in keeping this game alive and getting more people involved or at least bringing some old players back into it. Turns done in vgap and now time for some family time, so ty to all for letting me talk on and on about this.

I know what you mean. A few of us are playing a pbem game of civ4 atm, one coming to close and a second which is just starting to get interesting as people are moving away from their initial bases.
I don't have time for long games in one sitting so the format of a pbem suits me to the ground.
It might be worth your while looking at starting a vgap game here on boards, the shareware version was playable before (its been a few years since I looked at it, but I suspect its the same in that respect).

I played a few pbm games many years ago and quite enjoyed them, with I think one being "Monster Island" and "Mob... something"?? I also played "Time of Defiance" (http://www.nicelycrafted.com/todc/), which is an online space/strategy game for awhile, which I played far too much and enjoyed every second of before coming to the conclusion that I was spending far too much time on it (and money).

Nice to hear though that there are a few who remember vgap and when know more about my move, I'll see about getting something going here.

It's late and these old bones need some sleep..

Just got the word that I'll be moving to Cork next week, so fingers crossed and maybe "if" my stuff makes it through the move, I'll be back at this forum shortly.

    Finally!
