    Hey,

Need a bit of advice here, was in college studying Computer Networking and being honest i hate it, Found out computers is not what i want to do for the rest of my life. I always wanted to join the gaurds or even better move to America and Join the NYPD. They are always looking and the requirement i am worried about it on the day of hire you have to be a us citz. I am more than willing to move to america to do this but would i be wasting my time?

Well unless you have some way of becoming a citizen (marriage, parents are US citizens, diversity visa), the short answer is pretty much yes, you are I'm afraid.

If your considering this you should go over there and visit a stationhouse. Its a tough job and as you can imagine you wont be getting alot of thanks on the streets of NY. I visited the 52nd precinct in the Bronx and a cop gave me the tour. I put it to him that he loved his job and probably wouldn't do anything else. He said he used to but these days they walk a fine line. If someone reaches for something in a badly lit alleyway and you don't shoot your dead and if you do the dept will nail you especially if the dead guy is from an ethnic minority. If an Africian American gets shot the city cant be seen to go easy on the cop cos there could be a riot. How would you know if he was reaching for a gun or his id.

A cousin of mine was a cop and he didn't have too much good to say about it. He preferred when he was a detective to uniform.

Also the salary isn't great and you would have a pretty long commute to work cos you'd have to buy a house in the sticks.

Maybe you should try the fire brigade. They get loads of O/T. Women love them. Its regarded as a cool job. Cops leave the NYPD every day of the week to join for all of the above reasons. I went on the beer with 6 cops and a fire fighter over there and the first question I had for the firefighter was why on earth did he quit being a cop to join the fire dept. They all told me they would jump in the morning if they got the chance (for the reasons already outlined). A few minutes later they were all taking out their guns and letting me squeeze off a few (empty) and this was in a pub at about 10pm with plenty of people around.

    Some country.

    Great story! :D lol

Any ideas on the requirements needed for becoming a fire-fighter in the US? Presumably you have to be a citizen and then pass some sort of fitness test.

The first thing you have to get is a green card. You need to be living and working there with a social security number. Without these it is a waste of time to even dream of joining the police or fire departments.

Funnily enough your job experience is not really important when applying for the job as all city jobs are equal opportunity and begin with a exam. More Info

It's a long process which can take 3-5 years from the time of the exam to starting the job. Being a police officer does not mean that you can just "roll over" and join the fire department but rather you have to go through the same process as everyone else. A lot of police officers join the fire department because of the working hours, not having to deal with scum day in and day out and other practical factors, not just because chicks find them "hot".
