Great to see on a boxing forum that there is no mention of Ireland's newest world champion.

    Great stuff all.

Yeah, I'm glad you took the time to mention her progress throughout the tournament in India. I bet you're one of the many who never heard of her 'til after she won the other day and was mentioned on the news.

If you're not going to add anything constructive to the forum, don't bother posting here at all.

Actually, I do know her, and her father as well as I am from Bray. It was as a matter of interest I thought I'd check out this " boxing " forum to see what praise was being lavished.
As for adding something constructive, I believe that pointing out the lack of interest in a genuine achievment is a valid point. The forum is buzzing when Bernard Dunne wins against any old opponent, yet when Katie beats the best in the world, it merits barely a mention. And as moderator of a boxing forum, maybe you should be mentioning her along the way too.
As for posting her progress, I have done on another forum, just was shocked to see that no one on boards was bothered.

As I said, if you were that bothered why didn't you post something about it? Why should someone else have posted it?

I do have a life outside of moderating this forum, I do not live on the internet with the sole purpose of drawing people's attention to the various boxers and their achievments etc.

If people aren't interested in posting about a subject then complaining isn't going to make them change their attitude, it's up to you, as you claim to be genuinely interested, to draw their attention to this young woman's success in a positive way and let them know how much she is doing for the sport of women's boxing.

Being negative isn't helpful to Katie, to you, or to this forum.

People on boards are bothered, that doesn't mean they feel the need to jump online and post everytime something happens in the world of boxing.

That old opponent is only 30 and Pickering is fringe world level . Two key points ; 1. Proffesional boxing gathers much more interest than amateur boxing(as usually only people involved in amateur boxing follow the sport , the same can't be said of pro boxing)
2.Womens boxing in both pro and amateur is inferior to its male counterpart , this isn't being sexist just that there are more male boxers and on average they are better skilled and better to watch .

Apologies , but it's the same as football(soccer) . The men's game is more popular for a reason .

I agree but at the end of the day she beat the best women in the world and thats the same as me beating the best men in the world-fair play to her..

Normally I'd be inclined to agree with Big Ears here, as the facts are that women aren't as good in any sport as their male counterparts.

However this viewpoint is possibly clouding people's judgement of Katie's achievements and more importantly her ability.

Having seen her live three times I can safely say she is absolutely brilliant !!
Just before the first time I saw her, I was talking to a 3-time All-Ireland juvenile/youth champion from my part of the world. He weighs 75kg and he was in a box-off for a 4 Nations place just before Taylor's exhibition bout.
When he heard her name being mentioned he told me "Have you ever seen this one - she's f*cking brilliant. I wouldn't get into the ring with her for a hundred pounds (sic), even to spar". I thought he was exaggerating but was surprised that he would come out and say something like that. When I saw her fight I changed my mind.

She fights like a man. Her speed, timing, technical ability and ring intelligence are at a level that most male amateurs could only dream of. I know she spars the Joyces from Athy on a regular basis. They're the same Joyces who happen to be Senior All-Ireland champs and have won quite a lot internationally.

I would suggest to anyone that enjoys skillful technical boxing to get to see her box if you get a chance. You won't be disappointed.

    Oh yeah and congrats Katie.

Taylor's achievement is right up there with Sonia's in athletics or Michelles's in the swimming, top notch. I know female boxing is relatively new, but at least we know it's a legitimate and real world title, one governing body. Exactly same as the mens title. She faced and beat the best in the world.

As for Pickering being world level, don't make me laugh big ears.
Best of luck to Bernard, but why tell blatant mistruths about
    the strength of his opposition?

Oh and no matter how good females are in boxing, they will never be as appealing to watch as the men, they are not physically made for the game like men and their coordination, speed and strength will never be on par.
Like big ears said, I too am not being sexist, it's just nature really

Well I talked about her on my boards (sin- UCG) and had everyone taking bout her in Work too. Reffing in Gorey on Friday night, everyone was talking bout her.

To your first paragraph I agree completely and to your second I said fringe world class , some people have a stricter definition of world class and therefore would have a stricter definition of fringe world class . I consider any guy that can get ranked in the top 15 of two of the four organisations fringe world class(Pickering was ranked top 15 by all 4 I believe) . I consider the top 10 guys in a division world class .

Esham Pickering is the second best Super Bantamweight in Europe(thanks to the retirement of Mayhar Monshipour and my belief he's better than Hunter despite the loss)

Super Bantamweight lacks depth and Pickering is better than he showed against Dunne(not that he fought below himself just that you couldn't see how good a boxer he is because of Dunne) .

Setanta are showing the "Boxing for Gold" episode from Athena's "Winning Women" series on 3rd December at 8 pm featuring Katie Taylor. By then we will know if Katie has retained her World Championship title since competition takes place in China's Ningbo City 22 to 29 Novermber. I'm sure that ALL boxing fans wish Katie every success in China and will be following her progress with great interest - as well as watching Setanta on 3 December. An excellent documentary from Athena who have done so much to promote greater interest in Womens sports in Ireland

    Thanks for that.

Could you just drop a reminder here maybe a day before or on the day again, as featherheads like me could end up missing it otherwise.

Did anyone see Taylor last night on the Late Late.

She came across really really well. A real real STAR I think she is.
Very pleasant and warm and engaging.

One thing I thought odd, was her claiming GOD to be on HER
side in the RING. What is it about folks once they become great at anything, suddenly it's GOD who helps them:rolleyes:

It's the exact same with many other stars in many fields. GOD is always with THEM. Pat asked what if GOD was equally with her opponent and Katie looked
    a little dumbstruck:)

Jonathan Edwards the triple jumper was a big god botherer when he was competing, but has become an atheist since he retired. He reckons its a form of sports psychology, if you think the result is out of your hands you just concentrate on your training and performance, which is what the psychologists advise too. It takes a lot of pressure off.
Like you say though, what if the other person has god on their side too?
I imagine with the possibility of getting hurt religion becomes more common, think Bruno vs Tyson, blessing himself over and over again.

    Hey!

I'm absolutely delighted with all the coverage Katie has been getting, well deserved I have great admiration for her as a female competing in a male dominated sport. It takes so much hard work and dedication to get to that kind of level so she has earned all the positive attention she's getting.

She deserves to have her hard work recognised just as much as the male athletes, any good media coverage she gets can only help me in my chosen sport (MMA) and I'm very appreciative of that!

I'd really like to get in touch with her, just to say congrats and I'd love to maybe train with her at some point. I know my boxing could definetly do with some sharpening!

Anyone who could help me out there, would you PM me please!
    Thanks in advance,
Aisling Daly (www.aisthebash.com) just incase you didn't know who I was. :D
